DA* 55mm 1.4 or LTD 77mm 1.8 ?

Does the new DA* 55mm match the performance of the 77mm limited?

I have been reading and peeping about the legendary performance of the 77 and it is on sale for $200 off. But I recently ordered a DA* 55mm.
I want the best, please share your thoughts and opinions... all are welcome...

And... I'm not sure if the fact that I also just purchased a Sigma 70mm macro factors into this.. they say this lens is quite sharp also.

Trying to decide if I should order the 77...

Thanks...

Both really. They suit different faces if using in portraiture. I'd say the 55 is a bit sharper across the frame stopped down. Both are prone to PF wide open. 55 is WR whereas the 77 is a tactile delight.

They are different lenses. I personally prefer the DA *55 on APS-C, just because the 77 feels a little long in a lot of situations. 55 is sharper, weather sealed, has significantly less purple fringing (my copy of the FA 77 purple fringes like crazy), and is a half stop faster. On the other hand, the FA 77 focuses faster (noisy, if that bothers you) and has some of the best bokeh of any lens I have used. If Pentax ever releases a full frame camera, I think the 77 would probably replace my 55 as my favorite prime, but on APS-C I still prefer the 55.

I'm not a pixel-peeper. All I know is that my best portraits were captured with the 77mm.

The 55mm is a very nice lens. The 77mm just holds a special place in my heart.

Concerning the 77:
What's all this "Made in Japan" or "Vietnam version" business? Is one better according to where it was made?
I also see people post when they have one for sale "low serial number" does that also matter about it's quality if it was an early unit?

As far as I can tell, it is in people's imagination, but assembled in Vietnam doesn't command as high a price on the used market due to the perception that QC wasn't as good there as in Japan.

I have them both as well; if I had to keep just one it would be FA 77.

My current AIV is definitely working better than my previous MIJ FA77. Focus is more accurate, probably due to a bit of wear on the previous unit, which I bought used.

I use my DA*55 far more than my FA77.

I have both and use them according to the situation. As pointed out above, the 55 is probably 'sharper', but the 77 has a very special quality to its rendering and bokeh.

I use the 77 where I can, but it is sometimes a little long on APSC, which is where the 55 comes in.

I would prefer a pristine MIJ version over a new MIV for resale purposes only. MIJ also means it was assembled by a society with historical significance when it comes to manufacturing quality goods.

MIV turns me off every time I see it on higher-end Pentax stuff. It's no wonder they hide it.

The lenses are not MIV because the components are MIJ and the lenses merely assembled in Vietnam.

I just pulled the trigger on the DA*55mm, looking forward to getting it! I might have to sell my DA 50 1.8 and DFA 50mm macro to help fund it. I was going back and forth on the 55 and 77, but the WR on the 55 won out.

A popular suggestion on another non-camera-related forum while trying to make a choice is "get both" .. so I did...
