I got the 16-50mm because it is WR an it starts at 16mm. I live in an area with real crappy weather and and i wanted a zoom that was as wide as possible.
I find the IQ on par with the Tamron. There may be a difference, but you have to be pixel peeping to notice and I have DxO which automatically corrects CA and distortion anyway.
That being said, I bought mine used as well as a K100D so i can eventually convert it to screw drive if need be. I certainly would not buy it new at the current prices.

Well, in my book great performance at f8 is nothing to write home about. At f8 a lot of much cheaper lenses, including dirt cheap legacy ones, perform just as great. Personally I expect an $1160 (that's how much it costs here) flagship constant f2.8 lens to perform great at f2.8 and excellent at f4-f5.6. I just don't see that from this lens, at least my copy and few I've seen. My DA 17-70 delivered better IQ wide open at f4 than DA* 16-50 stopped down to f4. Not to mention SDM just failed last weekend on my lightly used (around 300 shots) lens and I've seen brend new and recently repaired lenses still fail the same (so I'm not buying the "improved new parts" bs).

I shoot at f4 "most of the time," it is just when I am shooting landscape photos, I try to stop down enough that foreground and background are both in focus. I am sure your 17-70 is a great lens, although it also has SDM that is prone to failure and it doesn't have the ability to change to screw driven with a hack. I really think there is way too much copy variation with this lens. Honestly, my copy is decent at f2.8 and nice and sharp at f4, but I know that some copies are pretty bad.

We love ours for what it is. It's handling is exceptional.

This lens may not be for pixel peepers. It's a fine photographic tool, however.
