I believe this has been asked before. To my memory you'll receive a response along the lines of "we haven't heard anything official from Pentax regarding SDM concerns..."

Funny that CRIS has no problems stating that they were waiting for months on new improved motors and PCB for the SDM repair.

wow. Got mine in today and it is 9045391
I really like the 16-50. Just don't want the hassle of another 5 month SDM repair. I obviously believe in the DA* series as I have 4 of the series. And Actually, the repair cost is about $75 more than the warranty.

When was my new 16-50 manufactured?

The extended warranty for the 16-50 is the first one I ever bought. That's how much faith I (didn't) have.

I'll shoot mine for a month and let you all know if the "new" lens has okay SDM. I suggest all new DA* 16-50 buyers to post the results, would be interesting to re-analyse the SDM issue again. I think a lot of potential buyers have been put away from buying because of the SDM complaint floating on the internet. If we can clarify this, maybe we get more bucks for Pentax to develop better cameras and lenses in the future.

I won't get mine until Friday, probably - I should not have chosen free shipping, I'm really impatient now. I'll post the serial number when I get it, but first a couple of things come to mind. I had one of the early K5's with sensor stains. I returned it and got a new one - the serial number on the new one was less than the one I had returned, and was in the same series as some significantly defective cameras. However, it's manufacture date was after the problem was discovered, and it's never had an issue. So I'm not going to be too concerned based on the serial number alone.

I own 3 DA* lenses already - and one of them (my DA*50-135) was one of the first sold in Southern California (I had pre-ordered it at a local camera store and was about the first to post that I had received it). While I think the lens has become decentered (thanks to a couple of accidental mishaps), the SDM still works great.

As of this writing, is there such a thing as a "Ricoh'd" 16-50? Who has one?

I just ordered the 60-250 which is back ordered. I am praying that back ordered means coming off the line fresh with new style SDM and just haven't reached the US yet. I will be bummed if back ordered means Ricoh is shipping out a pill of old Hoya lens from some warehouse in China.

I didn't know the 60-250 had a revised SDM motor.

Why fix some and not the others? At any rate, I would be happy with a Ricoh built version.

I assume the SDM drive differs in design among models.

The warranty I purchased last December was item number: SCL3-800. It was $95 but isn't on their website now for some reason. Maybe too many 16-50s imploded.

Probably not if you bought it from B&H like I did.... I looked in October to see if there was an extended warranty for the DA*16-50 lens from Pentax just like the one I purchased for the new K3 but nothing. I think that tells us that Pentax (Ricoh) knows very well about the SDM motor issues and won't risk insuring them...
