28 M works well?

Hi everyone!(this is my first post)
I´m thinking buy a 28mm. I want this lens for group portraits on indoor. I could see on ebay that there are a lot of old lens (M,A,M42) with this focal and f2.8. Anybody has work with one of them, works well? Is very difficult to focus on manual at 2.8?
Thanks and sorry for my english, you know spain is different...

Optically all Pentax 28mm lenses are very good.
With an A lens you could use all the automatic modes.

About 2 weeks ago I bought the "A" version of the 28mm f/2.8. I've taken a bunch of shots inside the house due to either bad weather or me working. I like the 42mm (35mm film equivalent) range it gives and the IQ is great.

Here it is on my K100D-S

the M 28 f3.5 is reputed to be of higher quality than the 2.8

Ebay is a good source. Don't overlook the "Marketplace" forum on this website either. (I think I'm not the only one selling such a lens in Marketplace....)

Thanks everyone for the replies! and another question: Anyone has work with zooms from old pentax series? Is there a big difference with primes? I ask that because I also want to buy a tele, and I hesitate between a 135 f2.5 or the 75-150 f4.0
the 135 I´m sure that must have a awesome quality but a 75-150 is so usefull!!

Vivitar 28mm f/2.8 close focus is another possible choice, probably found cheaper than the Pentax 28 f/2.8.

Just posted these examples in another thread, might as well get my flickr's money's worth

I have several 28mm lenses including the Pentax SMC-M 28/2.8. The Pentax is good, as are several others including a TX mount Vivitar, a Beston (?), a couple of others and a Sigma mini-wide 28/2.8. The Sigma is the best of all. It is very sharp with macro capability. I even have a Focal (Kmart's brand) in screw mount, and all the lenses are actually very close in IQ. However, the Sigma consistently delivers sharp pictures with great color and the close focus is IMHO an important attribute. The Pentax falls short of being equal because of the Sigma's macro ability.

I would say get the Pentax if you can. It holds or increases in value, and they're quite plentiful. The Sigma on the other hand is somewhat rare these days, and if you care about resale, the Pentax will be worth more.

And, I might add that in this focal length, many off brands perform spectacularly, and can be had for next to nothing. Don't be afraid to experiment a little. If you get one you don't care for, it'll suit someone else down the road.

Many years ago, when first getting serious about this hobby, I wanted the Pentax. I couldn't afford one, but I was able to save for the Sigma. Now, many years later, I have a Pentax and as I said, the Sigma is slightly better. I'd rate the Sigma as an A+, and the Pentax as an A-. All the rest get B+ or B due to size and/or build quality.
