but man, it does look damn sexy attached to your K-3. oh well. if it continues to get so-so reviews, that will alleviate my desire to get both the DA 20-40 and the Sigma 18-35... and save me $1000 in the process!!

Well then. Back to the original long term plan (a total pipe dream, but hey, why not?)
  • Flagship K-series body
  • All DA Limited Primes
  • Flagship L-series body
  • All FA Limited Primes
  • F*/FA* 2.8 ZOOMS

Well shoot, Gary, that really stinks! Crossing my fingers that this poor QC isn't representative of the whole batch. At least, quality control is what I would think to blame for softness on just one side. Looking forward to more user reports and official reviews--I still like this lens on paper, and hope it can ultimately live up to the price! A real shame and embarrassment for Ricoh if it can't... but I'm getting ahead of myself.

I had just about talked myself into this over the Sigma 18-35, but now I think I'll wait for more real world results before deciding.

I am finding it soft on the left side especially which is concerning. So far I have been shooting handheld but I am not having that issue with other lenses.
Gary, FWIW, the first, second, and fourth photos in your original post
look soft on the left side, at least on my monitor.

I will have to look, I think two of those were taken with the 16-50 and the fourth with the FA43. May have to test the 16-50 more. Just got it this week too.

This just show that people will buy whatever PENTAX produce...
Don't get me wrong, I have all the ltds (DA and FA), waited long for this first "limited zoom", but this lens is not exciting.

I will buy the Sigma 18-35 after I see some sample on Pentax body.
This is probably the limited lens I will skip.

Huh? As opposed to....what?
Would you like it better if NOBODY bought it and (obviously) nobody reported what they found?
And, since you have all the DA and FA Limiteds, you're referring to yourself, right?
What I'll wait for, is to see why most of the PHOTOS of the lens (here) are soft on the left side.
Seems a little more logical than slamming a product I've never seen, tried or tested yet. YMMV,
Ron

Oh, pentax. You just do not like having customers, do you?

The lens is lackluster compare to other limiteds.
After it was shown on the roadmap, many have high expectations of it.

However, PENTAX give us a very limited range, small aperture lens. The only surprise is WR.
and after Sigma gives the 18-35 f1.8? this 20-40 really pale in comparison.

I only buy PENTAX glasses thus far and I think they are the best.

But I think the 18-35 is a better value than this 20-40.
and the new Samyang 10mm f2.8 in PENTAX mount? that is also exciting.

If you think that line is offensive, I will take it back.
Happy for the OP though.

Well....... I have already packed it back up to return. It is soft on the left edge and I just cant ride that horse.

It seems to me I will stay with my FA*24 and F28...some time.

Need good review of this lens.

Got mine this morning. First shoots look good. Edges a bit soft at 20 mm wide open, but this has to be expected. Will make comparisons with the DA21 this afternoon. I don't have the DA 40 for comparison at the other side, though.
