The seller also had the FA 100-300 lens for sale, but nobody bid on it.
Which 100-300? The power zoom F4.5-5.6 isn't very good. The F4.7-5.8 is better but not as common.

The 28-105 is probably missing the button for setting the power zoom setting. This isn't really a problem, and it is very rare to see one that still has the button.

(Bold Type = 9+ Rating)

$215 F 28mm f/2.8 - 9.38 (Note: how does this lens compare with the similarly priced used but much newer DA 35mm f/2.4?)

I have made this comparison before:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/228174-pent...ml#post2422235

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/227605-28-3...ml#post2415138

One thing I will add is that the DA 35 2.4 is superbly flare resistant, whereas the F 28 2.8 would sometimes get clobbered by street lights and lamps and the sun. The F 28 2.8 is unusable without a hood in my opinion.

If only a DA prime in the 24-28mm range was released . . .

you may also want to consider local classifieds and to look at listings for cameras rather than just lenses. sometimes people will just put up a 'pentax camera' and not give any information on the lens itself except for a photo. when my LBA was rampant I had searches set up to include 'cameras' and not just the lens category. hth!

good luck with your lens search! just a word of warning, once you start, it never really stops....

There is a button visible on the barrel in the picture. Maybe it's the button?

Looks to be the 5.6. Dark gray barrel.

Ther is a switch and a button. It's the button that is usually missing. It doesn't do anything on a DSLR anyway.

Well, here's the latest:

-I passed on the seller's offer to include the FA 100-300 f/5.6 with the FA 28-105 for an additional $55.

-This morning I won a "mint" F 35-70 f/3.5-4.5 with caps and pouch for $44. although the lens database doesn't say the this is a macro lens. I'm hoping this lens' convenient size and weight will make it a useful option.

-This morning the used 16-45 f/4 I received a week ago for $159 would not auto focus. I became very frustrated. Then I tried another lens, and it autofocused just fine. I discovered that the 16-45's manual focus ring was not turning at all. It was stuck! There isn't any sort of lock switch I could find. Furthermore, there also was a "bump" of sorts when I rotated the zoom ring. I was furious! I was so mad I just angrily yanked on the focus ring, and it came loose. Now both rings are turning freely. I put the lens back on the camera and it seems to be working just fine again. But I'm worried if this incident could have hurt my new K-5, and what caused this lens to malfunction, and if I should expect it to get stuck again. I also started wondering about the K-5's AF assist beam, because I don't see it. Does it have one? And I think yesterday I inadvertently removed the SD card while the camera was on...

The K-5 AF assist only comes on when it is too dark to AF otherwise. It can also be turned off, so check Menu 17 in the Custom menu.

The F 35-70 isn't a true macro lens, but it does have a close focus feature. You turn the zoom ring past 70mm and it clicks into "Macro" mode.

David, the average price paid value in the lens database is also a historical one (although there is a trends graph it is often meaningless as for the less common lenses reviews are often very few and far between and there are not really enough data points to give a very useful curve) over the past few years there has been a marked increase in prices for used Pentax lenses. Partly this is beacause of increases in prices for new lenses, which inevitably leads to increases in second hand values, even for lenses no longer produced, but also the declining availability of lenses (lenses do have a finite life, even Pentax ones!) and the increasing number of Pentax users. Declining (if only slightly) supply and increasing demand equals increased prices!

Some of the reviews I've read strike even my inexperienced self as being at times a bit trite, trivial, purely subjective, and even downright silly sometimes. I wouldn't even attempt to write a review at this point. When will I know it might be okay to do so?

Would people get mad if I just wrote entertaining first-hand reviews that don't mean anything? You know, just for fun, saying things like, "hundreds of bikini-clad beauties run towards me whenever I pull the 35-70 out of my gear bag, begging and pleading to be the one chosen to pose and be photographed by me." etc.

"Even though I was only a guy on the White House tour, the secret service men rushed me to the oval office for a photo op as soon as they spotted my K-5" and so on.

I would love to see hundreds of bikini-clad beauties come charging out of Cayuga Lake this weekend

I went down to Stewart Park along the shore yesterday afternoon, just to check out the beach scene. Very cold, and very deserted! I wonder why...

The 35-70 and its relatives really aren't macro lenses. They are close focus lenses though, which you sometimes see labeled as "macro." However you won't get 1:1 without extension. You can get 1:4 though, I think, and maybe more on the longer ones.

** correction, I looked it up - 35-70, and 35-135 are 0.25 magnification, and 35-105 is 0.10 magnification. Source -> http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/lenses/zooms/medium/index.html
