Different versions of Sigma 100-300 f4

Looking through the forums and the marketplace, I've noticed that there are different "body" versions of the Sigma 100-300 f4.

Here is one.

Here is another.

I've searched and searched, but aside from looks, I'm not sure what other differences there are if any. Any ideas? Which one is newer? Better?

I think there was only ever one version (optics) but they did add the "DG" tag to indicate that it was suitable for full frame digital and they brought out an HSM version for CaNikon's whereas Pentax and Sony had to make do with screwdrive.

There isn't an OS version which sometime necessitates a change in the optical formula.

Sigma have fiddled with the surface treatment of their casings over the years so that may be the only difference.

There were comments that the later version had better coatings. I had the earlier Non DG version and it had no flare and very very sharp.

IMO they both are excellent lenses, probably rate as among the best Sigma have produced.

Thanks for the replies. I think the optics are the same, just the outer surface is different.

There are definitely older versions of the Sigma 100-300/4 for K-mount that are not quite as desirable since they cannot be serviced for front/back focus issues.

The newer versions can be adjusted to your camera body to provide spot on focusing.

Unfortunately, I do not know the serial number that defines the watershed, but if this is something of concern to you, you could enquire with Sigma.
