The mood in those above shots are great ... and the lighting ( even through it was that dark) is great.

Thanks... though it was dark, there was a lone mini-spotlight above the subjects. I thought the lighting was great for moody portraits and so asked my band mates to pose for me

Add to that the dark, non-distracting background, the situation was perfect for low key mood portraits!

These images really highlight the beauty of this lens. What I find amazing is that it is effectively a 75mm f1.4 portrait lens which comes in very handy for beauty photography and even stopped down to f2.0 you get that creamy bokeh that is so appealing with this lens.

The lens is versatile indeed as shown in the variety of subject of photos posted by everyone. Perhaps there is a "place in my heart" for this lens too

Isn't 75mm a tad short for portraits?

According to conventional wisdom a portrait lens should at least have 85mm.

I like wider focal lengths for portraits too, with them I'm able to push in tight. While I do like the flattering look of longer focal lengths, I find them kind of "boring" or "normal". (just my taste)

You can take portrait shots with anything that can blur out the background, to separate your subject from everything else. This is easy to do with any fast lens that is not a wide-angle.

However, I've also noticed great portrait shots taken with the FA 31mm f/1.8 Limited.

R U kidding? It is the perfect focal length for portraiture in my humble opinion. I would say that anything from 12-70 mm is right in there. In fact, I have used my 12-24 DA lens for portraits as well.

This sample shot at 24mm with the DA 12-24 lens.

Not wanting to be accused of thread hijack, I just wanted to say that I don’t have a 50mm f1.4

I do however own it’s slightly faster cousin (f1:1.2) and love it to bits, can I be considered as an honorary member of the f1.4 club.
