20-40mm AF Test Video

I just put this video together showing the AF sound of the 20-40mm limited vs the 18-55mm kit lens. (the in-depth review isn't live yet and probably won't be published until after Christmas, FYI)

That's quite a difference. Slower for the DA 20-40 ltd, but much quieter and less obnoxious.

Yup, a bit slower- on the K-3 at least.

For the money, this lens seems like a real failure so far. At least as an optical tool. As device that looks pretty and has nice build quality and is small, it seems like a success. I feel like the optics and ability to focus more quickly than a$50.00 are more important than build quality and size, especially in a lens so expensive.

I dunno, looks like a fantastic lens at $500, not so hot at the asking price. At $1000, it better come with a pony and make your coffee. It just seems a tiny bit lame compared to the Sigma 18-35 (at only $800), now that's a lens that did something really new, really groundbreaking. A slow lens with 2x zoom and variable aperture, that's just OK.

+1

And some people here that I have a lot of respect for are returning theirs.

I really wanted this lens to work. Was hoping it would have been the ultimate "leave on the camera" lens for me.

But now im sadly happy I did not order one.

Yes, the 20-40 started with such promise, but I've really cooled on it after looking at the samples posted.

About 80 degrees on the 20-40 and 100 on the 18-55.

If you are talking about me Eric, I am honoured.
I really wanted to like this lens, and I tried hard to talk it up with some early test shots. I did love its look and feel, and its rendering from 30mm up is really nice. When all is said and done though, $1000 is too much to pay for a not-very-compact zoom which is frankly not good enough for nearly half of its focal length range. With the lenses I already have it was not justifiable. Perhaps it was never going to be, but I had to give it a whirl.

I do not understand this comment.

The DA 20-40 is only 1mm longer than the DA 18-55,
and shorter than every other DA zoom.

Are you comparing it to your 02?

And twice the size of any limited prime I myself expected it to be a lot smaller, I suppose the weather sealing might add to its size. It's not bad at all but IMO, it feels a bit like an oddball compared to the other Limiteds. Makes a great close-up lens, though!

This time we're probably just going to jump right in to the in-depth review. It'll definitely be posted before the end of the year
