Looking for recommendation on a budget ~24mm prime lens

As subject states, a looking for a budget ~23 or 24mm prime lens. Manual or Auto-Focus. Just want something with decent performance. Speed of 2.8 or faster. Heard the Pentax A 24/2.8 or maybe Sigma Super Wide II 24/2.8...

Thoughts?

Sigma Super Wide II 24/2.8... all the way. It's a stellar lens, one my sharpest primes.

There's one A24/2.8, and a couple of K24/2.8, on KEH right now:

Pentax Manual Focus Fixed Focal Length Lenses - KEH.com

These Pentax lenses (same optical design)
are maybe not quite as sharp off-center as the Sigma or Kiron offerings,
but seem to have better color and flare resistance.

I guess it depends on your budget, and on the priorities for your style of photography.

I second that recommendation! There are MF & AF versions.

Why not consider the Sigma 24mm f/1.8 as well?

Samyang also makes a 24mm f1.4, but its pretty huge and costs a little more. Has A setting, though.

I have the Pentax A 24mm f/2.8. I'd call it mediocre. Not good, not bad - just ok. I prefer the FA* 24, but that's not a budget lens and it has its own detractors.

The Sigma Superwide is a great lens except for flare, where it's not great. You can work around it. Sigma made K, KA and KAF versions. It works nice on film too. The Kiron 24mm f2.0 is sharper than the Sigma, maybe not great at f2 but at f2.4 it's very usable. Kirons often have or had oily blades so check that. These are mostly K mounts with rare KAs. Vivitar sold some too, but make sure the serial number starts with 22 indicating Kiron. My Vivitar/Komine 24/2 is not sharp at all. Tamron has a nice 24mm f2.5 Adaptall, you can choose a K or KA mount there.

I just got a Cosina 24mm f2.8 MC Macro very cheaply and I'm pretty impressed with it.
I have not yet posted a review but see: Cosina 24mm f/2.8 MC MACRO Lens Reviews - Cosina Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

Mine has "A" contacts and is very easy to use.

maybe because it is not exactly a budget lens?

How bad is UG rating on KEH? Cosmetics or optics?

Could be either. KEH though tends to be very conservative on rating their lenses though. I bought an UG rated Pentax K 55 f/1.8 from them, and it had some scratches on the exterior and it was missing the mounting alignment dot.

Read the chart telling you what each descriptive abbreviation means. I would call them, normally bargain is OK function wise (still call on those too) and ugly is not, id avoid ugly unless its a fluke and got the rating from external cosmetic damage. I think ugly could also be good glass but smashed filter threads or something.

And I would also like a definition of budget. I think the A24 F 2.8 is at my extreme upper limit for affordable since I would only but the EX condition one.

Just a suggestion, stick with A lenses, way nicer to just roll the front and rear dials for shutter and aperture even in M mode, or switch to various A modes when speed is more important. That one extra step to meter a pre A lens doesn't seem like much, but the world isn't standing still for your picture.

Dirt cheap, but actually very good, is the 24 / 2.8 sold under names like Clubman, Tefnon and it's makers name Ensinor. It comes in most mounts and because it was a way off brand lens back in the day it was cheap, it still is. It was also good back in the day.
