Sigma 170-500 APO DG images

My new to me Sigma 170-500. This is my first experience with a lens this long.
I had some issues with moonshots last night but figured out what was going wrong.

I took these today hand-held... I want opinions about the performance of my lens, does it appear to be performing as a typical 170-500 should? It does have a bit of dust in it...
I want opinions on sharpness and contrast, etc... not composition or creativity, that was the goal of these test shots...

Camera: k-5 IIs

400mm, f/6.7, 1/400, ISO800

500mm, f/6.7, 1/1000, ISO800

I'm starting to really dislike photobucket... I will fix them this evening... (move them to flickr!)

If you want to assess sharpness of a lens, shooting hand held is not the way to go.

I agree but time constraints limited use of a tripod today. If they are adequately sharp hand held, I could only conclude they would be even better on a tripod.
If they do not appear sharp enough, I will test on a tripod before I rule this lens in-adequate...

It's a great lens. I owned one for a short time a few years ago.

Went for hare-hunting and this video of swans:

Have fun with it.

I think I got the images to display properly, I had spaces in the album title that may have been the problem..

Your images look fair close to what i would expect from my 170-500. You should also try it at f/8-f/11 range as this increases sharpness quite a bit.

I find the lens to be good but not very good to excellent. I also find that it is much better on near subjects compared to distant ones. And some flash fillin helps with contrast which makes everything look sharper. General color, contrast and CA control is great, and lens is remarkably sharp below 400mm.

Not sure if you have a filter on it, but i found my filter significantly degraded iq of lens. Perhaps something with front surface and filter being too flat producing veil flare/blur.
