On mine the lens is sharper towards the wide (18mm) and at that focal range F8 gives sharpest centers and F5.6 for edge to edge

I try to use it at least one stop from wide open, so f4.5 at 18mm to f8 at 55mm. The range from about 24mm to 40mm is pretty good.

In low light, I try to ignore the sweet spot entirely. It's better to shoot wide open at 1/30 than hope that shake or motion is OK at 1/15.

A fast 50 is very handy to supplement the kit lens, because the kit is so slow at the long end and starts to fall off in IQ. Even an A50/2 is 3 stops faster and nearly pancake in size.

f/5.6? No way... I would say the range started at f/6.3 and would start tapering down at f/11. At f/16 you might as well shake the camera as hard as you can while you fire the shutter.

They did switch the optical formula for the 18-55 kit at one point (when then became "II") -- they are a bit different.

Guys,

Yes there are 2 versions, 1st version; 12 elements in 9 groups ,, 2nd version; 11 elements in 8 groups,

Here's a review that more closely resembles my experience with the 2nd version lens(DAL has same formula), sharpest at 18mm F8 for center sharpness and F5.6 for edge to edge sharpness. Always keep in mind there's alot of sample to sample variation and your copy may not have the same results. It would be best if you test your lens yourself and see where the 'sweet spot is'.
