Can you tell me some more about Lester Dine?

Dave
It's originally a dental lens back in the film days for Pentax and Nikon mounts and maybe Olympus. Mine did not come with the Nissin macro flash and does not have the teeth markings on the distance indicator. There are reviews of this lens virtually everywhere. Being a manual and true 1:1 macro it takes a lot of turns to focus which helps with fine focus. The Vivitar is said to be the same but I'll test them out.

FA 77mm Limited.

Color, contrast, sharpness are better than any other lens in my collection. I love the way it renders, and love it's field of view. If I don't know what lens to take on an outing.. I take my 77.

My favorite, not necessary the best, is my Hasselblad 110/2 Planar FE. I use it on 645d with Hassy to 645 adapter, and what I get out of it when stars line up is tear inducing.

I don't think I have a best lens as all my lenses are best for certain situations.

My best lens for macro is my 105m Sigma
My best lens for landscape is my 10-20mm Sigma
You get the idea!

Better to ask what's my favourite lens then!! That changes from week to week but right now I can't get my Super Takumar 55mm f1.8 off the camera!!!

Vivitar series 1 105 macro. Reciently used it to photo a bunch of glass plate negatives shot between. 1860-1906. The sharpness and detail it captured was stunning. It is also amazing for portraits with gorgeous oof rendering.

So by rough calculation there are three Vivitar mentions, two Helios, and some limiteds of varied pedigree!

Plus the Lester Dine and Jupiter...

The most important lens for me is the Sigma 50-500 (today I have the second example of it.). As important for me still are DA* 16-50 and Sigma 10-20.

Best lens

This is an interesting question, and I have to answer on basis of various categories:

Best low-light: Sigma 30 mm f 1.4 (good for photos in near darkness)
Best for sharpness: Pentax 50 mm f 2.8 macro (sharpness of this lens is eerie)
Best color rendering for flowers: Helios 44K-4 58 mm f 1:2 AND Pentax Ltd FA 43 f 1.9
Best for parties and inside gatherings: Tamron 17-50 mm f 2.8 (constant)
Best street lens: Pentax FA 24-90mm f 3.5-4.5 (Wonderful lens that ought to be better known.)
Best portrait: Pentax FA 77 mm f 1.8
Best cheap lens: Sears 50 mm f 1:2 (similar to Pentax-M 50 mm, but may be a rebranded Rokenon)
Best fast 50: Pentax-A 50 mm f 1:1.7
Most fun: Pentax-DA 10-17 mm f 3.5-4.5 (also useful for landscape photography and capturing images of large buildings)

Different lenses are best for different situations, and my list above sort of reflects my thought processes in selecting a lens to use in any given photographic situation.

Maybe question should be: If, for the rest of your life, you could mount only one lens on your Pentax DSLR and never remove it again and never use another camera what lens would it be?

My best lens ?
undoubtedly the DA*55 on film.
The DA 40 for digital.
Vivitar S1 70-210 /3.5 first version for the rest.

Oof (out of focus). To a finer point I should say bokeh. In the case of the 105, it renders the subject so sharply that the bokeh is also enhanced. The contrast between the two improve the whole beyond each seen in isolation.

Althogh thie 105 is my best lens it does not get the most use. If I could have only one, my Sigma 50 1.4 would have to be the choice.
