My best lenses are the K28/3.5, K35/3.5 and Voigtländers 40/2.0 and 58/1.4 and 90/2.5.
The K28 is the most versatile, the VL58 gives the most pleasing pictures.

M50 f1.4, probably, but the lens I like best is my DA21 f3.2

My desert island lenses are DA 15 limited and DA *55. So much has to do with focal length, even more than rendering. FA 77 probably renders better than the DA 55, but it is too long for a lot of situations.

The largest number of my photos are actually taken with DA *16-50. It isn't my favorite, but it is a bread and butter range and more flexible for walk around situations.

The Voigtlander 125mm f/2.5 APO-Lanthar SL is my best lens. It's extremely sharp--even wide open--but that's not its best feature. It is essentially free of aberrations (including both lateral and longitudinal CA), and has great bokeh. It is also a joy to use due to its build quality. The long-throw manual focus allows for precise focusing when doing macro work. Since acquiring it I have sold all of my other macro lenses in the 100-150mm range. That includes a lot of great lenses, none of which were as good as the APO-Lanthar.

I was fortunate enough to buy it many years ago at a fraction of its current value, so I suppose it is also my best lens investment. It has appreciated in value more than any of my other lenses. I look forward to using it on a FF camera. And yes, the 90 and 180mm APO-Lanthars are also pretty great. They should all do quite well on the new FF camera.

Dan

The great thing about the list is how varied the members' choices are. That is a good thing--it means there are a lot of lenses out there to please people. As for mine, it is the 18-55 kit lens. That is unfortunately all I own so far! But I plan to get a limited lens, I just don't know which one yet.

"Best" varies; different tools for different purposes. I like several lenses but haven't formed an emotional attachment with any of them.

Best hand-holdable reach: Sigma 50-500 OS for aircraft and birds in flight. Also works well for the moon and sun (with solar filter) when I can't setup a larger telescope on a tripod. Reasonably sharp; some reviewers comment that the 50-500 is soft at 500mm but I think that's based on older pre-OS models. Being able to zoom out to 50mm without swapping lenses is very useful for landscapes mixed in with wildlife photos, crowd shots during an airshow, etc.

Best wide angle: Samyang 14/2.8. Sharp even at f2.8, making it ideal for long exposure night shots.

Best versatility: Pentax DA* 16-50. Zoom ranges from wide angle to portraits coupled, with decent low light performance.

Best image quality: Pentax FA 43. When 43mm is an appropriate focal length, none of my other lenses give such good results.

I almost listed the 18-55 as "best bargain". Compared to the kit lenses from most other brands, the Pentax 18-55 gives good images and feels sturdily built.

My best lens is the DA* 300. I never cease to be amazed by how excellent it is.

My best zoom lens is the FA 20-35 f4. Best older, manual focus lens is the K 50 f1.2.

Maybe question should be: If, for the rest of your life, you could mount only one lens on your Pentax DSLR and never remove it again and never use another camera what lens would it be?
Actually, I almost did this by mounting the Canon FD 50 mm f 1:1.2 with the aid of a Chinese adapter to my K-20 with Katz eye screen. The darn thing got stuck on the camera and had to go to a service center for removal. The Canon FD would not be a good lifetime choice either as its magical rendering and bokeh were pretty well dest
royed by the optical glass adapter.

FA31Ltd.

Now, that being the universal answer, could someone close this thread, please?

I'll disagree. I can take landscapes with a big zoom, just have to stitch 30 shots together, but you can't take wildlife photos with a 31mm lens.

Therefore I'm taking my Sigma 100-300 f4. Its only downfall is a 3ft min focusing distance so I can't do macro work, but it'll do everything else.

Plus, when stranded on a desert island I'll spot the rescue ship a lot sooner with it than your 31!

That's why when I travel, I do so by air: any plane going down near a deserted island won't leave any survivors, rendering your 100-400 nothing more than a slightly bigger piece of debris
