I have a FA 28-105 f/3.2 and I wrote a review on it. The lens is my #1 because it is sharp, colorful, and practical. AF can be quirky but for a lot less occurrences than you would think. My K-30 will occasionally have difficulty focusing in low light, on the sky, finely detailed textures, etc. Then again, as I have tried more and more lenses I find that every design seems to have trouble focusing on something every now and then. Moving subjects can also be troublesome.

LiveView focusing is slow and methodical but I have never see a screw drive lens go fast in this mode. It is spot on accurate and works well, especially for slow deliberate shots.

I also have a slightly fungus infested FA 28-105 f/4. It's bigger and heavier and not as contrasty as the f/3.2.

Make sure you use a hood with whatever lens you decide on.

I have this Tamron 24-135 and the Pentax 18-135. That Tamron is really nice, and in general can usually get better pics than the Pentax. But...
  • Physically, Pentax is lighter (405 >< 530g) and shorter (76 >< 80.6mm) and smaller (62 >< 72mm lens)
  • Pentax is weather resistant
  • Tamron is full frame
  • Pentax covers wider: 18mm-24mm
  • Pentax generally has nicer contrast
  • Pentax stronger 24-50mm range (but Tamron catches up as one stops down)
  • Tamron stronger in 65-135mm range (but Pentax catches up as one stops down)
  • In general, Pentax > Tamron when wide open
  • In general, Tamron sharper than Pentax
So, tradeoffs, but for the sake of WR, wider, and lighter/smaller, I almost always use the Pentax 18-135, but I'm keeping the Tamron. If there ever is a FF, the Tamron will be incredible.

I have a FA 28-105 f/3.2 and I used it on K01. the focus is quite snappy and accurate, being contrast detect. This lens is a bit of a sleeper in my opinion. It has great micro contrast and sharpness is pretty good stepped down a bit. Mind you, it is not prime quality if that is what you are after. In my opinion it has similar IQ to the DA18-135.
