Pentax F 35-70 for $39 How Good can it Be?

Really? A pentax F 35-70 for $39 including a Pentax SF 1N camera because the guy selling it on Ebay didn't have a rear lens cap? This has to be a joke. This lens can't possibly take decent pictures for 39 bucks....or can it?

FA 43 Pic of lens and camera.

F 35-70 taken at 35mm F3.5

F 35-70 taken at 35mm F6.7

This little baby is going to hold me until I can purchase the FA 31.

Mine came with the SF1 for a rear cap, a few years ago, for about the same price.
It's always in my bag, when it's not on my K5, or 01, which is much of the time.
Great macro feature too, once it's figured out.

You got your Kit for $10 less than I got mine, but mine also came with an old Lowe Pro Nova 1 bag and OEM manuals in French and English. Maybe a few filters thrown in.

Listed with a camera: $39, listed as a lens:$60 and up. Happens every day.

The times are changing. When I first started acquiring Pentax lenses most of the listings went on and on about the film camera and "oh yeah I'll toss the lens in for free". Of course very few buying the camera gave *#%# about the camera and only wanted the lens. I guess sellers are finally catching on that those old lenses are where the value is. "with a camera attached as a lens cap" LOL.

My apologizes to the film shooters for the totally unintended slight to film cameras.

F 35-70: It can be very good for $25

I think that this is an excellent value-for-money lens. It's reasonably sharp, renders well, and has a decent zoom range. The close-focus capability serves me well enough when I need it and when I don't have my macro lenses with me. I got my very clean copy for $25, attached to an SF-10.

You are right the deals are getting less and less common. I don't think it's a slight to film users, there is just an abundance of those cameras so there really isn't much resale value.

Mine also came with an SF-1 rear cap! And a pelican case, and a 70-210, and a Hoya 35mm f/2.8, and a flash, and an F 50 f/1.7 and some filters and for less than 100 dollars.

I didn't get a camera with mine. Just the lens. But nevertheless I am quite happy with it!

Wow. I still use that set up when I want to shoot film. Love it. Just used that lens on my k-5 last month. Love the macro capability. See my shots of spiders and snakes in the F club.
Paid about $400 for SF-1, that lens and a F 70-200 when new. The SF-1 was the first Pentax AF slr and they wanted the glass to be as fine as the camera when going up against the competition's AF.
All are still in use together or separately in my bag with my K-5. $35 is a steal IMO. I'd pay $35 bucks just for the rubber eyepiece if it came with one. Pull that trigger.

I'm finding that the 35mm focal length on this lens seems to produce the sharpest pictures with good light. Inside this lens has more difficulty due to the obvious fact of the 3.5 minimum lens aperture at 35mm and higher at longer focal lengths. The pictures appear more "muddy" especially at higher ISO like 3200 (on my K5). I notice too that this "F" series lens tends to have more muted contrast and more of a yellow hue but I noticed that with all of my A and F series Pentax lenses. My DA,DA* and FA lenses do not have that muted contrast or yellowish hue.

This lens surprises me again. With a flash at 35mm & F8, I can't tell the difference between it and my Da 21.

Just FYI, it will be the one @ 35mm rather than 21mm.

I love this lens, too, and use it for film and digital. Great to see other opinions here.
