Is the Sigma 8-16mm still available new for Pentax? I don't see it on B&H or Adorama and the B&H link from the PF review comes up as "no longer available
Answer from Sigma -
"Unfortunately we no longer sell the lens in the Pentax K mount and we have none in the warehouse either.

Don't forget there are very good square ND filters available (Lee for example). I have changed to square for ND filters on my original 10-20mm. Easier to swap between lenses with different filter threads too.

Seems that "Sigma Corporation of America" may be slightly out of step with what the actual production is for this lens.
Sounds like the Aussie Sigma Distributor (C.R.Kennedy) has it sorted with what is actually happening with the production limited runs employed for the Pentax version of this lens.
Big thumbs up and thanks to i_trax for passing on the info on this.

I was in the same situation as you a few years ago. Back then my choice was either the Sigma 10-20 or the Pentax 12-24. I eventually chose the Pentax 12-24 as Popular Photography said something to the effect that it was the 'best of the bunch' for ultra wide zooms. I've used it for 1000's of shutter actuations on 3 different bodies.

It has been fantastic. I use it to shoot vintage vehicles, hot rods, etc...at outdoor shows. The sharpness is better than excellent. Almost 3D.

As far as Sigma goes....I've tried the 10-20...very nice field of view. I have lot of Pentax lenses....zooms, primes and I've been very happy with the quality.

I also have one Sigma....the 150-500. Except for the fact that the Sigma mount has more play than I'd like....and when I checked this out on a Canon forum....it seems this is not unusual with this lens on a Canon mount....either.

I'm not worried about it....works well.

My limited experience with Sigma...is with my 150-500...which is on the opposite scale...of super wides like the Sigmas you are considering.

But I find the Sigma ....a wonderful lens...sharp....works well...quiet AF. I would assume the 10-20's and the 8-16 are built to the high standard.

Don't think you can go wrong with either a Sigma wide or the Pentax wide.

Indeed they do have it sorted. I've just bought one from their internet store on eBay. I already have the 10-20/3.5, which I like very much, but the wrap given the 8-16 from some of the more experienced users here on PF was enough to pique my curiosity to see what this lens could do, and the price from dcxpert was too good to pass up.

I've just this week bought a Sigma 10-20 f3.5 from dcexpert, and I'm keen to find out whether the 8-16 would have been the better buy. Funds are tight, so please be gentle.

Get the 8-16.

I tried it against the variable aperture 10-20 and it was no contest, sharper, better colors.

Stitching is fine, the problem with stitching is it's sometimes hard to accomplish with wide angles and doesn't work at all with moving targets. If you're not doing a landscape I'd forget about stitching (and I love stitching!).

Just my experience.

Please do let me know how's the lens sharpness especially for the 10-20mm. I'm about to get the 10-20 3.5 since I need filters, hearing reports where some copies are sharp to the corner but more reports of corner softness....which is holding me back at the moment.

Here's a few quick samples.
Sigma 10-20 f3.5 @10mm,1/60s, f8, ISO100

...and cropped to upper left corner.

At 20mm. 1/80s, f8, ISO100.

...and cropped as above,

Finally, Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 DC @ 1/80s, f8, ISO100

...and cropped,

All taken with the K5II on a tripod, shooting into the sun(!) and all are jpegs straight from the camera (ie. no sharpening).
I've specifically shown the corner crops as I believe they would show the 'worst' part of the image, sharpness wise. Anyway, it's early days as I've only got the 10-20 this week, but I reckon it's pretty good.

Regards

10-20mm 3.5
Pros: better flare control and rendition of the sun than the older model
Cons: 82mm filter, sharpness worse than the old model
Who says the f/3.5 version is less sharp then the older (variable aperture) version?

I have no sharpness issues with my Sigma 10-20/3.5, on the contrary, it is impressively sharp.

I've seen great shots from both 10-20 and 8-16 lenses, so I'd choose with respect to the focal range.

I think the OP was referring to the corner sharpness - here is what Sigma say about it in their specs (left is F3.5 version Vs the older F4.0 on the right)

This is another interesting comparison from Photozone of the same Sigma lenses.
