for my M50 and K100D, i compose by choosing the aperture on lens clickety click, hold the DOF trigger (instead of pressing the shutter half way, avoiding accidental releases, easier to meter multiple areas and easier to hold the camera) and press AE-L till i get an exposure that i like, release, focus and then shutter. am i using the term stopping down correctly?
If you already change the aperture on the lens, you don't need to hold the DOF trigger. The trigger is only used for an auto-diaphragm lens since the lens is always at largest aperture setting (for focusing purpose) on auto. Stopping down metering means you meter at the aperture you shoot. Focus and composition are done at the largest aperture.

That's a 58, not 85. I got it since it's so cheap ($10). From what I heard, this lens is very sharp. I tried it, but it's no where near my FAs at wide open. But I guess it's my quick fix for the Nokton 58.
