You also might find a Sigma 28 f/1.8 in your price range, though it is a big lens.
I have the Sigma 28mm f1.8 macro and it's a great lens. It's not small, as mentioned, with a front ring of 77mm. It gives a great 'eye view' perspective, though, and the macro ability has close focus of just a couple inches. I bought it for models, miniatures etc. but find myself using it a lot indoors instead of the 16-45 (which is also pretty nice).

The other choices in the 30-35mm range are good, too. The Sigma 30mm lenses are well-regarded as is the fantastic plastic 35mm.

As for the review scores... don't look too much at them, the grading done is highly subjective. Rather take the time to read some of the reviews. Then you'll be able to sort out the good from the bad.
+1 to this. majority of the reviews here seem along the lines of "10!!!!!! BEST LENS I'VE EVER USED, SO SHARP AND PERFECT, YOU NEVER NEED ANOTHER LENS" and it's for some mediocre old thing.... you have to remember that the lens scores are not relative to each other. that is to say, the 9.38 and 8.86 you're looking at are not on a scale together. they are totally unrelated.

Yep, the more money you have in it (and to spend on it) the harsher you will likely be on it.
