I would Love to have those - an he did say price was not a primary concen... ok a quick check for Canadians and I see (this is pre PST and GST taxes)

PENTAX smc P-FA 31mm f/1.8 Limited - $1298.11
PENTAX 43mm f/1.9 Limited Edition - $470.11
PENTAX smc P-FA 77mm F1.8 Limited - $944.80

Peanuts $2713.02 + taxes and shipping Of course this was just one store and buying international (US) used would be cheaper - but new , at a store that generally has good prices and reputation that is a boat load of loonies.
Wrong trio

the DA 70mm F2.4 $599
DA 40mm F2.8 $299
DA 21mm F3.2 $599

Total cost $1497 loonies, those prices were from Mcbains in Alberta.

You now have 21-70mm covered with very good glass in aa perfect walk around package.

I needed shots that were clean and sharp right out to the edges even wide open. The Pentax gives me this.

I see you're not using the *16-50 2.8

I support all the others in saying, the Sigma 17-70 is well worth a very good look.
I find this a very useful, top quality lens for everyday use. Gives excellent results. I would give this lens serious consideration.

Despite all the exclamation marks to the contrary, please do consider the Pentax 16-45mm. There is no lens sharper edge to edge in this range. It has excellent IQ and is lighter than the Sigma. Plus it's got the Quick-Shift system and is close focusing enough that some makes would slap on the badge "macro".

As for price, they both come in around the same. The Sigma has the one stop advantage but the Pentax has 2mm extra in the wide-end, which is an extra 6 degrees horizontal angle of view (whereas you won't even notice the missing 5mm on the telephoto end).

I needed shots that were clean and sharp right out to the edges even wide open. The Pentax gives me this.
I'm really really hoping the pentax 17-70 f/4 will continue this tradition. *crosses fingers*

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I think I'm split between the the 16-45 and the 17-70 while probably leaning more towards the latter because of the reach. Would the IQ differ from eith of these, and if so which would be "superior" to the other?

Given the fact I have to buy remotely (no dealers in the country) and this lens has a habit of coming up snake-eyes I would not even consider it. Besides, it is heavier and a little more money.
