Sigma 17-70

Just ordered a K10D new .
Forgot which Sigma lens is most often talked about that is best .
Please , so I can finish the order , all Sigma 17-70 are the same or are there different ones ?

Or any ideas for a first lens would be appreciated .
Not getting the kit lens .

Thanks for the help

Well the 17-70 is an excellent replacement for the kit lens. There is also a 18-50 f/2.8 that is frequently mentioned.

Are there different variations of the 17-70 , like dg and apo and so on ??

Nope. Though pentax is releasing a 17-70 sometime soon. But if you don't have a lens at all you can't really wait.

I recommend the Sigma 17-70mm lens. Very good replacement for the kit lens. Little bigger, heavier and it uses 72mm filters but the extra 15mm at the long end plus f/2.8 at the wide angle comes in handy.

I used to have the kit lens and Sigma 70-300mm. Used the Sigma most of the time to take pictures of my kid because 55mm of the kit lens was just simply not enough. Now with the 17-70mm the 70-300mm does not get much use.

Agreed that the standard kit feels like it stops just a bit short of where I want to be alot of the time. Mostly when I pull out the 70-300 I'm 200-300mm anyways as I'm trying to shoot wildlife.

A really top lens the 17-70, for its price. Have a look at Ecosse's thread where ther a number of comments on this lens as well.

Another vote for the excellent sigma 17-70, I use it almost exclusively...

It can suffer some sample variation so just make sure you check your copy if you buy one.

Yet another vote here, as well. If you like close-up work, it does a good job with that, as well. I agree that the 18-55 is not quite long enough, but when my husband and I took an overnight trip Easter weekend, the 17-70 stayed on the camera most of the time..

The only way I might consider swapping the Sigma 17-70 for the Pentax 17-70 is if the Pentax model was weathersealed, as it would be nice not to have to worry about at least one of my lenses should I get caught in the rain. I like the weathersealing on the 16-50, but it's not long enough and it's too expensive.

Chalk up another vote for the 17-70. It was on my camera for the entire World Pentax Day. Speaking of which, sure seems like there wasn't much fan fare.

17-70 is really nice as a primary walk around. I did three weeks in Italy and Greece and was satisfied with the range and the quality of the photos.

P.S. I bought my K10D as a body only and the 17-70 as my first lens. Go for it.

The 17-70 is a very useful lens, I have no regrets about choosing it as my first lens for the K10D.

It’s a nice lens, but not without flaws. Still it's currently my walk around lens, although I'm looking for something better….
