I see the 75-300 for $130, but I can't see the 70-300 for anything less than $159 -
we're talking about the following, right?

Telephoto AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro ---> Tamron | 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro Lens | AF017P700 | B&H

And NOT the following?

Telephoto AF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 LD Macro --->Tamron | Zoom Telephoto AF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 LD | AF276P700

^^ Buydig.com is great. I got my FA 50mm 1.4 from them. It was completely painless, reasonably priced and free, fast shipping!

On the subject of the Tamron 70-300mm... I love it too. I've posted this elsewhere but here is a photo I took during one of my first outings with this lens.

Some more photos with this lens here.

I am very happy with it.

Macro Capability

I agree with the foregoing comments, for the price this lens is a very good buy.
Yes a PF anomoly sometimes occurs in very bright light, otherwise a really recommendable lens,.
Good choice, Ivoire.
An example of the macro capability:

What's the best focal length for macro with this lens? I understand macro is available 180-300mm, but is it usable/sharp at 300mm?

These are very impressive images.

I'm really surprised with the quality of those shots - seems like good value.

Here are some macro test shots I took when I first got the lens put onto a K10D. It really isn't that bad. I do call it my purple monster however after shooting some duck bathing action shots in which every drop was purple.

Re your query on focal length for macro, as stated before, the length has to be 180+ in order to engage the macro switch. After that, I find its pretty well to your own convenience. 180 to 300 can all be utilised, and quality wise, not a great deal of problem.
The photo I added (Bee) was at macro 300mm.
Hope this helps.

Pretty good for a quick handheld jpeg at 300mm! This lens is has one of the better IQ/$$ ratios I've seen.
