Conclusions? Is the Tammy a better lens, or are they 6 of one and half a dozen of the other?
I recently owned both the Tamron 70-300 DI LD & the Sigma 70-300 APO at the same time, I was initially disappointed with my copy of the Tamron - poor colour/contrast rendition & too much purple.
On purchasing the Sigma I did several side by side shot comparisons (don't have the images anymore, sorry). My conclusions were...
Tammy slightly sharper from 200m + , below 200m not much difference
Sigma colour/contrast much better than the Tammy
Tammy generally 1/2 to 1 stop more underexposed than the Sigma
Build quality - I prefer the Sigma
Price - Tammy much cheaper, nearly half the cost
Size/weight - tammy a little lighter but hardly any difference between the 2 really
Purple - Sigma shows none so far, Tammy far too much
After using the 2 lenses side by side for 2 weeks I sold the Tammy.
I think however it is important to mention that there seems to be a lot of sample variation, especially with the Sigma & it's difficult to say if my "findings" are relevant to everyone else. It's quite possible I had a poor copy of the Tamron & a good Sigma copy
