Has anyone done any direct comparisons between this Tammy and the Sigma 70-300 APO?

Or even the non-APO version of the Sigma 70-300?

Conclusions? Is the Tammy a better lens, or are they 6 of one and half a dozen of the other?

I recently owned both the Tamron 70-300 DI LD & the Sigma 70-300 APO at the same time, I was initially disappointed with my copy of the Tamron - poor colour/contrast rendition & too much purple.

On purchasing the Sigma I did several side by side shot comparisons (don't have the images anymore, sorry). My conclusions were...

Tammy slightly sharper from 200m + , below 200m not much difference

Sigma colour/contrast much better than the Tammy

Tammy generally 1/2 to 1 stop more underexposed than the Sigma

Build quality - I prefer the Sigma

Price - Tammy much cheaper, nearly half the cost

Size/weight - tammy a little lighter but hardly any difference between the 2 really

Purple - Sigma shows none so far, Tammy far too much

After using the 2 lenses side by side for 2 weeks I sold the Tammy.

I think however it is important to mention that there seems to be a lot of sample variation, especially with the Sigma & it's difficult to say if my "findings" are relevant to everyone else. It's quite possible I had a poor copy of the Tamron & a good Sigma copy

I haven't used both, but I would probably agree with everythng you say about the Sigma. I have seen some examples that almost made me question if that really was the lens they came from. My copy has been near perfect, and I couldn't ask for anything more from it. One thing I will say is that I have never seen purple fringing on any Sigma examples, both my own and from others. Obviously not the case with the Tamron. About the price though, at least on this side of the pond, the difference is only about $60, so it's more than well worth it to have no PF.

Thanks for the responses - appreciated. The decision re a lens to cover that range out to 300 is really difficult, between the Sigma, the Tammy, and also the Pentax DA 55-300, which is not yet available here in Australia (may be by the end of June, but only a guess by the distributor).

As posted on another thread, it may be smarter to wait for the next in the DA* series, whenever and whatever that may be.

I'm just going to keep on thinking, gathering info and opinions, and not jumping into something too quickly, methinks

Pete,

This was my thinking also, until I saw the price here for the Tamron 70-300, and the images (see in this thread and my latest examples right above.)

I was always planning to get the DA* 60-250, but it's summer now, and I need the range... now. So I got the $130 Tamron 70-300 to tide me over until the 60-250 is available in August or whenever, and then I'll probably sell the 70-300. I figured if I got $80 for it in August, that amounts to about 4 months of usage for $50. $13/month is a fair 'rental' fee for this lens

Hi Budda,

Hmm.. How much are you asking? (I now have a 1960's Vivitar 80-200 which fits the new K10 fine, but it is very heavy and fully/exclusively manual.

J - that's a good thought. For someone with LBA that may just be the tie-breaker...!

If the DA* won't be available until August where you are, then it may well be next year before we see it here in Australia! So maybe you're right - get the Tammy now (cheaper than the Sigma APO) and sell it when the DA* arrives.

Hmmmm - my other half has SBA (Shoe Buying Addiction) even worse than my LBA, so I don't think she could grumble at a few bucks rental for a Tammy until the real deal arrives... Maybe I could convince her to sell some of her shoes... NAH, tried that - never works!

Nice images, I'm either colorblind or my lens is defective. Try as I may, I just can't seem to get this purple fringing people keep talking about. What am I doing wrong?

Speaking of LBA I just bought this Novoflex 300 / 5.6 on ebay. By googling it is supposed to be a german cult lens still used by bird / nature photographers. Design philosophy is sharp at center but poor at the edges hopefully croped out by digitals smaller sensor. My 11 y'o is starting to get into both birds and photography so a lens that looks so cool (like a missile launcher) is easy to rationalize.
