DA* 16-50 f2.8 Disappearing from stores?

This might be significant or not, but the DA* 16-50 f2.8 suddenly seems to be out of stock in a number of major retailers in Japan. It is a bit strange to see this happening and I can think of two possible reasons. Either the K-3 is selling very, very well and a lot of customers are buying the 16-50 with it, or it could be a sign that the lens is about to be updated.

For anyone who knows about Japanese retailers, the ones that have no stock are - Fujiya Camera, Map Camera, Yaotomi, some big branches of Yodobashi and Bic Camera. They are kind of shops that more serious photographers buy from.

Just for the record, if you need the lens now, I think you should get it now. Playing the waiting game for future releases is not as fun as using your camera.

Maybe its to allow the DA 20-40mm ltd a chance to prove itself - by making it the "only" option (from Pentax, in that zoom range, at a non-kit tier).
But I think a lot of people would like an update for the 16-50mm. Add HD coatings, make AF more reliable (yes, they claim they already did, I know), maybe improve the IQ further

Somehow I kind of doubt that - but one cannot disprove a negative. How long to CP+?

CP+ 2012. Given the K3 is the halo product for now, one would expect extensions like a 16~50 update or the TC, not blockbusters (given the K-01 was a surprise):

Pentax is displaying new interchangeable lenses and camera accessories that are currently under development at the Japanese camera show, CP+ 2012. On show will be the smc PENTAX-D FA645 90mm f/2.8 medium-format lens, smc PENTAX-DA 560mm f/5.6 and smc PENTAX-DA 50mm f/1.8 K-mount lenses, telephoto zoom lens and standard lens with “body cap” design for the Pentax Q system, super-thin interchangeable lens for the K-01 compact system camera, and a lens adapter for mounting a K-mount lens onto a Q-mount body. Names and prices of these products will be confirmed at a later date.

I could see a 16-50 update. Maybe add DC motor, tweak the optics and change the coatings. It's a pretty good lens that has such a bad reputation due to decentering and SDM failures.

The DA 20-40 is rather a replacement for the FA 20-35,
which had been available in Japan until quite recently.

Hey, maybe they're about to release the new 16ish-85ish that's been on the roadmap for a while... (Wishful thinking, but one can hope, right?)

Every year, several lenses seem to be out of stock after the Christmas holiday season. I think it mostly due to manufacturing capability. I waited over a month for a DA 15 when I bought mine. It was out of stock everywhere for quite a while. Most lenses aren't in constant production. They are made in batches.

This may be an overture to DA* line update; at least I hope so.
Personally, I would rather wish they had updated DA* line first with the HD and red rings and better motors, but left Limiteds for the 2014.

Agree! I am happy with all DA limited lenses I have, and it looks the HD coating and aperture upgrade didn't improve the performance too much. Some may miss the DA 15 for sun/star burst. Don't understand why what a rounded aperture can help on a 15mm or 21mm lens, better bokeh? Most of my picture taken from these lenses does not have bokeh to judge.
On the other hand, 16-50 really needs optic retouch, and all DA* lenses need a stronger and more reliable AF motor.

I don't see a lens not on the roadmap being released at CP+. There's 18-80 or 24-75 or somewhere in between on the roadmap, but I don't see an 18-80 being F/2.8. I don't see a 24-75 being a lens that would be released before FF.

I think we'll get some new lenses soon, but I don't have high hopes for CP+ or CES.

True. I sometimes wondered why they didn't introduce a new term (16-50 II ... now with improved motor!) already. It seems pretty obvious they fixed something, I guess they just didn't want to own up to having a problem in the first place?

But a 16-50II with the HD and claims of a better motor would be a pretty reasonable thing. I don't see a need for change in actual formula or anything.

I suspect they had excess stock of the 16-50 and didn't want to handle all the dealer returns when the 16-50 II came out.
I'm waiting patiently for the DA* refresh. Please let it be DC motors. If it's a red ring, HD coating and a higher price, I don't see the point.
