DA40ltd sharpness wide open

I was looking for info on the DA 35 2.4, so I just read the comparison thread about the 'DA40 vs DA 35 2.4 vs xs 40' -- they said the da 40 was not sharp until F4? I call bs.

Here is a shot that still makes me smile. My first test shots with my K-01... I used my seldom used DA40ltd as a test lens

Here is a quick shot, handheld in some funky sunlight, wide open at F2.8. and a purt near 100% crop. That is me in the reflection, on my knees, wearing white shorts, a black t-shirt with a pinkish/ orange emblem...

I agree - more accurate to say where it is sharpest ( see below) . Doesn't mean it won't work for you at f2.8 though ....
nice shot btw.

The 40 is sharp at any aperture. It is sharp-er at 5.6, but already pretty amazing at 2.8.

Optyczne, the original Polish version of Lenstip, disagreed
(and also cast doubt on the Photozone review quoted earlier).

After praising the central resolution, they wrote that
"It's a completely different situation at the edge of the frame.
Around fully open, we have a situation which may well be called weak.
To reach decent levels [MTF50 of at least 30 lp/mm on the K10D],
we have to close the lens down around two stops."

Test Pentax smc DA 40 mm f/2.8 Limited - Rozdzielczo

Strangely enough, this review does not seem to appear in an English version on Lenstip.

If we say about K200D, DA40 is sharp from 2.8. As for K-5IIs, it's sharp from f3.2. f2.8 is so-so.

How big is the center?

I thought my K-01 had the same sensor as the K5ll...

But I wont argue with someone who has that combo...

Anyway, when a review site says a lens is sharp in the center and softer off center... How big is the 'center' ?

The red rectangles show the regions that Lenstip/Optyczne use:

From the same site (Photozone) that I quoted the above resolution figures (see below)

(But then if you believe what this site says about the DA18-135, one would never buy it)

Fact is you are getting the required result no matter what anyone, or any tests, say about this lenses "figures".

All lenses are a little sharper stopped down but that doesn't mean they aren't sharp enough. The DA 40 Limited is very sharp at f/2.8. I do most of my DA 40 shooting wide open and indoors. That is the reason I bought it and it has never disappointed. The OP's photo speaks for itself. My wide open results at close to medium distances actually appear sharper than the occasional f/8 (or stopped down even more) landscape shot.
