SMC-FA 50/1,4 sharpness

Focus on New York. Good enough?

Did you use tripod and low ISO? Did you shoot raw or is that an out of the camera jpeg? What sharpening settings do you have?

Keep in mind that most if not all lenses get sharp one or two stops from wide open. But at first glance, it seems about right.

Top lenses (e.g. most Pentax * lenses, plus a few others) have good sharpness and overall IQ stopped down only 1/3 or 2/3 stops. A few rare lenses (FA31, FA77, DA35/2.4) have very good IQ wide open (probably because each of these had or could have had a version that was about 1/3 or 1/2 stop faster - but that wouldn't have been any more useful).

For this lens (I had the marginally better F50/1.4) 2 stops is about right; 1 stop is the minimum.

It has its good qualities, and some people really like it, but it's less expensive than the DA*55 or FA43 for a reason. However, if you're content with its mid-range prime quality you may find it useful for producing many nice images.

Yes, where it's sharp it is quite adequately sharp. Bearing out the notion that some suggestions that the 1.4 is not sharp enough, or at least annoyingly less sharp than the 1.7, stem from inaccurate focusing

I found it rather good for f1.4.

I'm please with the result too. Shoot jpg and added some sharpness in LR, but not much. Depth of field is really tiny too.

It's pretty sharp for 1.4. An angled subject like this will have a weaker result because the OOF areas and the chromatic aberrations from the OOF areas (magenta for OOF areas in front of focus, green for OOF areas behind focus) will "meld" into your very thin in-focus region. If you shot a flatter subject, it would seem even sharper.
