The only lens that I've used that wasn't screw drive was my Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 (manual focus) and the rented Pentax 18-135WR. I haven't tried an SDM yet, and the motor on the K-30 is pretty good.
You'll notice (maybe not on the k-x) that the camera drive motor does have some good twist - and can cause a bit of movement if you're not expecting it (compared to DC motor on 18-135WR).

I have tamron 17-50, 28-75 and sigma 17-70 v1. There is not so much difference in these lenses, biggest difference is having 17-28mm and 50-75mm focal lenghts and HSM. Sigma 17-70v2 should be even better than mine v1 and os not eating batteries anymore. If want to manage with one lens only i would leave tamron 28-75 out cos its just not wide enough for general use.

17-50 is little short but can crop little after always. But HSM is nice to have and focal lenght 17-70 is really enough for many pics in general use, lens is sharp even wide open so i would probably choose sigma 17-70 also. My sigma 17-70 focusing accurancy is better than my tamron lenses, its enjoy to use cos of that. Still i use tamron 17-50 more than any other lens...but my sigma is v1 and eats batts fast!

So i think u made wice choise, they are all good zooms anyway
