Whats better for motosports on K30, Sigma 150-500mm or 120-400mm

Hi guys,

i'm shooting mainly motosports (motocross, superbike, road racing...) with my K-30 so that's the reason why i'm buying zoom lenses. Now, the dilemma is between Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM and Sigma 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG APO OS HSM mainly because of the budget.

Anyone here had a chance to shoot with both of them? My first choice was 150-500 but i started reading several reviews that it tends to be slow on the big end, and that i'd have to shoot with f8 in order to get descent shots (meaning higher iso and therefore lower quality image). How is the 120-400 compared to the big one?

I was shooting before with 55-300 nikkor and with sigma 70-300 lens on my Nikon D300 but i simply needed bigger zoom in order to get the right action on the track. That's the main reason i'm looking over the bigger zoom lenses.

Also can anyone let me know if a better solution would be Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 and a teleconverter?

Fast lenses longer than 300mm in a Pentax mount are going to be incredibly expensive. There isn't much out there either unless you look for used. Sigma has a 500mm for a few thousand. I doubt that sticking a TC on any lens is going to be much of an IQ improvement although the Sigma 100-300/4 works quite well with the Sigma 1.4X TC. Remember that you're loosing a stop or 2 with a TC. Your K 30 has very good high ISO IQ so either of the 2 Sigmas you mention will probably perform OK.

I'll open up a can of worms here for saying it but if you still have your D300, you have a lot more telephoto options. Nice shots BTW!

I have a Sigma OS 50-500 that I use on a K-5 for outdoor sports and it focuses very quick.

I've tested a K-30 with it for birds in flight and it focused very quick.

I think any of the newer HSM Sigmas will be decently fast on a newer Pentax DSLR.

All these zooms need f8 at the long end for best results.

I have shot alongside my friend with a Sigma 150-500 and IQ between the two lenses was similar but we were not comparing focus speed.

The only TC I tried on my Sigma 70-200 yielded poor AF performance.

I've switched from nikon to pentax and the only thing that makes me regret is the lack of lenses, with canikon it's much easier to get your hands on lenses either on the market, from friends and so on... anyway, i'm with pentax now and i'm looking for the right lens to do the job. Probably i'll go with bigma or the 150-500, waiting for few more suggestions, and meanwhile i'm looking in the market section here on the forum.

One more thing, i've noticed that there is version of the lenses without OS which are normally cheaper, will this make any difference having in mind that the k-30 has image stabilization in the body, or i got something wrong here?

The latest versions with OS use a different optical design making them sharper at the long end.

Just got it, they said the shutter was replaced, so now everything's ok, here is the first pic at home

Can i check this? Is there a way i can check if the shutter is new, by number of shots or something like that?

Today i've ordered the Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM

Bad part is that it will be here in two weeks, the order has to go by the local dealer and then to the regional importer in Bulgaria in order to get two years warranty :S anyway, looking forward to get my hands on it...

I have been using 150-500 for a while now. Good lens but I find it slow on autofocus which makes it difficult to get good action shots.
Here is a shot of mating kestrels
