Smc p f -- p?

In shopping for a zoom lens, I've noticed that some have the letter "P" after SMC--for example: Pentax SMC P F 100-300mm f4.5-5.6. In one thread, someone suggested that the "P" stood for Pentax, but why would a letter designating Pentax be needed when the full name is spelled out already? Could it possibly mean "power," as in "power zoom"?

Are you seeing this on the lens or just on peoples web posts and ebay listings? The 'P' is often added by ebay posters for some reason. It really means nothing official AFAIK, just Pentax.

It really stands for Pentax. Retailers just don't really understand Pentax's nomenclature, so some to make up their own. There are definitely lots of inconsistencies out there.

FWIW power zoom was only available in FA-series lenses.

Thanks for the quick replies. In pictures of the lens, the "P" doesn't appear--only in the description. So it's reasonable to conclude that it's a redundant designation for "Pentax" inserted by someone some time ago and has nothing to do with the features of the lens?

'P' has nothing to do with the lens features. Here is a list of Pentax nomenclature: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/53-pentax-dslr-camera-articles/64298-pent...explained.html It's not complete but might help. You can now add "HD" for the new coatings, and WR for weather resistant, and AW for all weather.

Here is another resource that might help: Pentax K-Mount Lenses Explained: The differences between various Pentax lens series

It's part of the lens description on the lens serial number cards that come with the lenses:

SMCP-FA ZOOM 20-35/4 - FA20-35 f/4
SMCPAFZ2.8/35-70 - Kf AF 35-70 f/2.8 zoom for the MEF

Not often used though to differentiate between lens types.

Ah, the "P" appears on the serial number cards, but the Pentax name doesn't? It's certainly plausible, then, that the "P" would simply stand for Pentax.
