Looking to replace 28-300 tamron

As the title suggests had my k5 for awhile now ready to replace my aging zoom. I have the 18-55 wr kit lens and several primes. I have heard great things on both the 18-135mm WR, and 55-300WR. Kind of leaning towards the 55-300 simply to cover the range I shoot at completely. I'm sure there are several other great choices but would like to stay with WR Pentax lenses if possible...

55-300 is an excellent lens, used it for years before I bought DA*60-250. My wife's kit is: 18-135 and 55-300 which covers 18 to 300 in two lenses and overlaps enough that she does not have to change lenses too often.

But 18-135 is also an nice step up from the 18-55 so tough call which one to get first. My personal opinion is to look at upgrading both, then you have a solid WR kit from 18 - 300. Which one you get first I guess depends on which focal length you use the most.

In a perfect world I agree both would be nice but to many irons in the fire. I would opt for the 18-135 however I do a lot of sporting events that I can't quite reach at the long end of the 135...

Looks like 55-300 then. I did not mean to upgrade both at once though, just do the one you need the most now and watch the used listings for the other when you have the budget.

On the 55-300 there are three varieties: SMC DA L (no quick shift, plastic mount, no hood, usually only available as part of a kit though often found used), SMC DA (has quick shift and a hood, but costs a bit more), and HD DA (new HD coatings, WR, quick shift and hood, more expensive). AFAIK they are all the same optically.

As an owner and user of the DA-L 55-300, I find that optically it is really quite good for an inexpensive lens, but I REALLY miss quick shift. I'm not going to shift up though. I'm saving up for the DA*60-250/4. The extra speed, the optical near perfection are great draws for me.

Seems to be a difference of opinion on this one, some say it is not near as good as the 55-300 others say it is. I have seen no one claim it is better, though. I have never used it, though my DIL has one on her k-x. If I had the choice I would go 18-135 before 50-200.
