Lenses on EBay

Specifically, new Sigma lenses which ship from Japan. Is the only downside no warranty? A new copy will go for $650 here in the states, maybe on sale for $550. It'll go for $450 used here on the marketplace. And then I'll see a brand new one on EBay "buy it now" for under $400. Just curious as to what the deal is.

No, its brand new. Supposedly factory sealed. I'm just wondering if its grey market, no warranty etc. What is the down side?

A sealed box can still fall off a truck. I would also think they're definitely considered gray arket wih no US warranty.

when I visited Japan I was absolutely amazed how everything was cheap but all manuals in Japanese only, some gear have Japanese letters on all buttons and no International warranty , within Japan only.
so the only thing I purchased there was a brand new Pentax F 1.7x AF converter ( long time gone in Australia) , great product and still going strong without any problems

I may have been very lucky, but I just bought a sigma lens from a Japanese seller and I couldnt be happier. I would make sure the seller has a lot of good feed back and also a couple week return policy.

I think the shipping is also pretty steep on the ebay listings that I've seen, like $50

Like any purchase on ebay, research the seller... A large seller with a solid reputation is less likely to screw you.

I'd say the major issue is that you have to expect that you'll need to go through several copies, I'd say an average of 2 + 1 (where you return two and keep one), of any lens to get a good one. So you have the time/cost of shipping several times to deal with, unless you know the retailer will foot the bill for that, which I'm guessing is extraordinarily unlikely. With Amazon or the big US retailers, you at least know they'll take your lens back and either refund or replace without any hassles (or at least I haven't hit the limit of returns that will trigger resistance.)

This is a good point. Sigma and tamron don't always get it right out of the box so if you need an exchange, you may be screwed. I would prefer buying a used lens from an owner with good feedback who can show images or attest to the performance of that specific copy.
Good luck

Good points. Thanks for the info. Saving $100 may not be worth the potential hassle.

Is it a lens compatible with their USB dock, that might help you make some adjustments if it isn't right.

I have also noticed these Japanese deals on Ebay. They didn't seem to be there when I was shopping Ebay heavily 2-3 years ago. I guess I need to do some shopping when I visit Japan sometime.

I guess when you are on the spot int he shop you can take your camera and test it works as part of the purchase transaction. This would capture gross defects but would not capture subtle things that cannot be seen chimping, or failures which occur after some use.

It's as much as checking for gross defects but also checking out some random shop in a foreign country that is selling a lens (not a cheap one) without a warranty.
