I think I bought a dog. - now with sample pics and comparisons to other lenses

Picked up a 400mm f/5.6 Sigma prime with integrated hood. 72mm filter ring. Thought I was buying something sweet for a good price. I think it was the APO version I should have been looking for. I paid $200ish and the photos are.... purple. Very purple. Veryveryveryvery purple. It's well beyond fringing. Pit of my stomach is churning at having wasted money on this

I've got the Canon FD version of this lens - the non-APO one, which has a PK converter on the back of it. What aperture are you using? It isn't great until you get to f11 I've found. Mine has purple fringes, but at a level I can usually dial out using Lightroom. My 60-250 is a completely different class of lens, but as Pentax don't do anything "big" for a sensible price, it gets used occasionally. When I saw that you were in Durham, I though you were just up the road from me...across the other side of the pond though!

Post a few pics then I can compare to my Canon version.

Could you post a DNG? If it is a purple cast rather than fringing it might be easily fixable in post processing.

Yeah, please post a photo or two with exif data. Is there a purple cast, or is there just a lot of purple fringing? Is it lateral or axial CA?
Make sure you don't have any filters mounted (some lenses have filters on the back btw) and use the lens hood.
the 400mm lens should also be used with a tripod or at least very fast shutter speed.

Can't exactly post a DNG here guys, they're kinda large. I will post some photos later today.

With photos and dng files its usually best to put them on a filehost. People love to use flickr for jpeg files. For dng, maybe try dropbox. There are many websites that allow this for free (under certain limits), if you want to

If you have google account (e.g. gmail) you can upload the files to google drive and share the links for downloading.

You got what you paid for. That lens is crap in the review section. You should have purchased the APO version instead.

You probably bought "stoogies" lens. He got rid of his in that review for exactly what you are describing.

Here they are as image links.

[snipped - google drive doesn't keep around image links for more than a few minutes, you'll have to go to the actual download pages above]

Oh btw, someone mentioned the lens review database on these forums. I think this is the entry for that particular lens:

It is worth noting that the purple fringes only appear on the border of over exposed highlights. I think it is just a matter of reducing the exposure a little to avoid blowing out those highlights. I think the purple fringes will all but vanish.
The purple tint (as opposed to the fringes) is easily correctable by adjusting the white balance.
