I'll recommend what I usually recommend for macros. The Elicar 90mm f/2.5. It's the same as one of the two Vivitar 90mm macros, and distinguishes itself on looking good even at small aperture sizes, which is what you'll want unless you're into focus stacking. It's a bit rare though, and not necessarily very cheap.

I can't find a Vivitar in Pentax mount on ebay, guess they are not commonly available and I can understand that. However, there are quite a few available in Nikon and canon mount. On the other hand there are a couple of Pentax A 100mm Macro f2.8 available but from Japan sellers with not much rating. Between the two which one would you recommend, is it worth to buy a Nikon film camera to avail the Vivitar, I know this a pentax form or should I try my luck with the Japanese sellers.

Cheers

You can also consider an SMC-M 100/4 macro and extension tube. It does 1:2 without the tube. Optically from super tak through M lenses except for coatings they are all the same

Wow. If I shot film and used old glass I would buy a Nikon and a Canon body as film bodies are so inexpensive and small. I would then be able to find the best deals on the cleanest and most highly regarded old glass available! Mix and match to your hearts content!

This kit in the Marketplace is really what you are looking for - with all the accessories you can get 1:1; you get the Tamron AD-2 90mm Macro in the BB version, hood, 2x and Extension Tube for the 1:1 and a 'A' adapter. As far as just the lens goes - that lens has the best 'snap' into focus I've ver seen - and is very sharp corner to corner.

Unfortaunately it is in Aus - heavy shipping charge.

Just to Second Lowell's suggestion. I recently got a pristine M42 SMC Macro Tak 100mm F4.0 from Henrys in Canada. Maybe a bit expensive at $170. But typical Tak tank-like build, beautiful focus feel, sharp, and little PF/CA.

Is this the lens you guys are referring to (Pentax 100mm f/4 SMC-M). If yes, I looked at it then moved on because I thought if I am getting a macro then why compromise on the reproduction ratio i.e. 1:1 (I know that means bigger than 1:2 and it's called life size, but to be honest I don't exactly understand what it means). I know there is the tube option to make it 1:1 but I am not sure if that would equal to quality of real 1:1 and f2.5. Finally, is this and the tak (does it mean Takumar) same.

Cheers

1:1 macro simply means that a 24mm object will cover 24mm of the sensor/film. A 24mm object would cover 12mm of the sensor with a 1:2 macro.

I second cahudson's recommendation, the M42 Macro Takumar F4.0 50mm preset lens goes to 1:1 and is a very sharp lens. You can usually find them from any where fom $140 to $200

What is M42? I have asked this in another post. When a lens has M42 mount does that mean it will fit pentax me super without anything else

M42 is a screw mount lens. You would need a k mount to screw mount adapter for it to work on your ME super. The Genuine Pentax one works the best, but I have had success with some off brands.

To use the M42 Macro Tak(umar) F4.0 100mm on any K-mount modern dlsr or K-mount mirrorless (K-01) you need an adapter - the best being Pentax P/N 30120. (Bite the bullet and get it.. IMHO not worth screwing around with clones.. Adorama or B&H))

Also, regardless if a Macro is 1:1 or 1:2, this only relates to the 'throw' of the focusing helicoil. The 1:2 being shorter. There is no difference in optical rendering - only 'magnification'.

This means there is no loss of IQ by adding extension tubes or an extension-tube helicoid. (simplified - yes, there are light-intensity effects, and possible vignetting - but these are no different than if the lens helicoid itself allowed 1:1 - as does the preset Macro Tak F4.0 50mm))

I got a used Tamron 90mm in great shape from the marketplace last year for $300 including shipping and still under warranty. I am very happy with it. It is a little over your budget but at least it has autofocus, which some of the lenses mentioned above don't have. Although I use manual focus with this lens it is nice to have the option.
