I try to only keep what I actually use or the few lenses I have with sentimental value. I used to be much worse, but before we moved I cleared out a lot and realized I liked not having so many choices.

Yes. I used the 150-500 last summer with very nice results. I use the DA*300 most of the time. Light is quite limited during the winter.
Derek - I'll have to take a look at your gallery.

I think a general rule applies: keep the one's you use on at least a semi-regular basis. I have lenses, for example, that I never use and never want to use (DA 18-55 I, M 28/2.8, M 50/2, Vivitar 80-200/4.5). They're hardly worth the trouble of selling, which is another issue.

I'll keep a lens if (1) I like what it produces (particularly in terms aesthetic qualities, not just sharpness or other numerical specs); and (2) It fits my shooting style. I don't own any fast wide angle or normal FOV lenses because I don't need fast aperture at those focal lengths. I don't own the DA* 55 or the FA 77 because I'm not a portrait shooter.

One of the reasons I've wound up with so many lenses is that I prefer primes but sometimes require the focal range versatility of a zoom. So I have landscape prime kit (DA 15, M 20/4, K 28/3.5, K 35/3.5) and a landscape zoom kit (FA 20-35, FA 24-90). I have two primes for critters (DFA 100, DA* 300) and a zoom for critters (Tamron 70-200). Then there are the specialty lenses as well (K 50/1.2, F 85/2.8 Soft). All these lenses get some use. Some, like the DA* 300 and FA 20-35, get a lot of use. Some, like the DA 15, the K 35/3.5, the K 50/1.2, and the DFA 100, I wish I could use more often, as they are stellar lenses but aren't needed that often. That's the chief problem with having too many lenses, particularly too many superb lenses: there's glass that's bound to get neglected, unjustly.
Greg - I can relate, I only 3 zooms, Tokina 20-35mm 2.8, Sigma 18-250, and DA 55-300 I find for the last several months I haven't used the zooms but prefer shooting with the primes. I know I miss shots but sometimes I don't mind missing the shot, you can't catch everything. The K 50/1.2 is something I would love to see but locally here there's a couple for sale in the $500 range and I just don't think it's worth it especially since I have the Tak 50 1.4 early version which I find has fantastic rendering.

Sigma 18-250
Sigma 70mm Macro
Pentax 40mm XS
Pentax 50mm A f1.7
Pentax 50mm DA f1.8
Samyang 8mm fisheye

So 6 at the moment.

In the next few years, I can see myself adding the Sigma 18-35 if it ever get's released. I'd like to fill in for fast wide primes for indoor kid photos. I might dump the Pentax 50 A at some point cause I got the DA due to AF and I don't need 3 lenses that cover a 10mm span. It's hard to justify selling it on ebay or something for like 60 bucks considering that doesn't put a dent in getting anything new.
Sumx good that good that you have a small number of lenses. I found that I just wanted to try out a few lenses then I sold them to pickup more interesting lenses. I got lucky on some M primes which I picked up for like next to nothing and then sold for the forum prices here locally. If I didn't I'd have over 50 lenses in one year and that is way too much of a bad habit, lol

Lister - you like your zooms

Five, eleven or fourteen depending on what you include.

The DSLR ones I actually use (most used on top) , all of them AF K-mount:
Pentax 18-135 WR
Sigma 150-500 OS
Tamron 90mm F2.8 Macro
Sigma 50mm F1.4
Tamron 10-24

I also have some other SLR lenses some of which I use occasionally and others hardly ever if at all.:
Tamron 18-250 - K autofocus
Samyang 800 mm cat lens - screw mount (M42 I think) with K adapter
Pentax 18-55 DAL kit lens - K autofocus
Ricoh 50mm F2 K-mount manual
Tokina 28mm F2.8 K-mount manual
Vivitar series-1 70-210mm K-mount manual

For the Q I have three:
Pentax 02 Zoom lens
Canon 11.5-90mm TV zoom lens (C-mount) - I don;t use this much but it looks awesome on the Q10 :-)
Unbranded 50mm F1.4 CCTV lens (C-mount)

The Tamron 18-250 usually lives with my K-r and goes with it when I lend it to someone.
I also have two old teleconverters and one AF with contacts but haven't found them at all useful and converted the two non AF ones into extension tubes.

How many? The fewest I've had in years.

It's finally to the point where I'll pass on basically every good deal in order to get a quality lens I'll actually use. More space, lighter bag, no "if I only had a ______" regrets.

I wouldn't pass up a 15 or 21 Limited, and the FA* 300 could use an upgrade to the DA* version...hmm...

I find myself in almost exactly the same place. I know exactly the kind of shooting that I do and I've got a particular kit in mind for those jobs. I'm not a fan of carrying "what if" gear that only ever turns into excess weight.

I thought I knew what kind of shooting that I wanted to do, but then I got a great deal on a DFA 100 WR and realized that I tend to find reasons to use the gear I buy.

Now my camera bag has gotten full, so I'm hoping that stops the LBA

Just sold a couple so I'm down to only 12 lenses. (I think)
But I am eyeing the new lens roadmap.

Me, too. I'm waiting to for the DA wide zoom and the DA tele zoom.

Jim - that's another way to look at it, but then my LBA would come back

My corollary to this: when there's a tie between similar lenses sell the expensive one that way you can afford more lenses!
Hey much to my surprise this Quantaray 28-70 f/2.8-4 mfocus is pretty darn good!

Mike - just another reason as I don't need another ex wife, it would cost way too much compared to the lenses.

QuoteOriginally posted by mikemike Quote
It sounds like there might be a strong correlation between the number of lenses and the number of ex-wives.

Hey Ryan - Isn't that why some of us have 2 camera bags then

I don't know about that...If it wasn't for my wife, I wouldn't have the latest lens in my collection. Some how I won the wife and mother-in-law lottery.

Get a bigger bag. Problem solved!

Seriuosly, my largest bag cannot accomodate all of my gear. My two pancakes are always there, one of my zooms also, and I swap between the flash, the long tele, of the macro (two out of three).
