Pentax 50-135 or Tamron 70-200 what one would you use for weddings they both are highly regarded but what one would you prefer and why do you prefer the lens of choice??

my preference is the 50-135 focal length... as you can get closer to the action.

The 50-135 is probably better because it's more compact and a bit easier to handle. You won't need the extra reach, so the lighter lens will be a blessing. The DA* is about a pound lighter than the Tamron.

I don't photograph weddings, but I'd guess the Pentax range and weight would be preferred, the only question would be whether you trust the SDM and/or are willing to rely entirely on manual focus. Probably if you're heavily into weddings you'd have at least two of everything for redundancy anyway, so maybe the question would be two 50-135s vs. something else. I'm thinking screw drive in general would be less preferred for weddings, just due to the noise.

I will suggest 70-200, not only it will provide you a better subject isolation for wedding portraits but let you capture it from comfortable distance. Having owned both, I don't think 70-200 is noisier to be objected in church. AF speed is same even though 70-200 has screw drive.

This screwdrive noise thing is really over saturated.

Unless you have to focus from one end to the other for 3 times, no one will notice!

I have tried to find this lens and had no luck and the ones I do find they want to much for it. It must be a good lens because you never see it

It is an excellent lens. Mine is a bit battle scarred but still going, I got it for under half the price of the DA 50-135 (closeout sale when Sigma stopped making it) although of course it is not weather sealed, you do gain a little extra reach. The HSM is ultra quiet and smooth

PS I have the Tamron 70-200 also, it feels a lot bigger and heavier!

well I ended up getting the tamron 70-200 and got a tamron 17-50 so I think I made the right decision and thank you for all your help with my issues

I also would take the 50-135 2.8 as the 70mm end on the 70-200mm might be too close for some situations...all you need to do is crop if you are not close enough
I have the Sigma 70 - 200mm and it is very heavy to use all day long.

Is it me or does the price for the 50-135 just seem way to expensive compared to similar lenses??? I mean I know it's a great lens to have in your bag but for the price...wow. You can get the same quality with the Pentax 60-250 for the same price. Sure you will lose a stop but you will gain reach and versatility....and about 12 ounces (340 grams) but it is lighter than the Tamron 70-200 at 2.5 lbs

50mm will be more useful than 200mm in most wedding situations. So I'd go with the 50-135.
