Does anyone have or has used both? I am leaning towards the 120-400 because of the wider short end and faster maximum aperture. I am curious how the 500 compares to the 400 @ 400mm. Being able to shoot at 5.6 instead of 6.3 is more important to me than the 100mm extra reach but sharpness would definitely be the deciding factor.

Really good choice! I miss mine even though it was laying on the shelf most of the time since I got the DA300. It worked great with my Kenko 1.5x Teleconverter.

Most of these long zooms have a sharpness sweet spot at some point less than their max focal.
All things being equal I would think the 150-500 would be sharper at 400 than the 120-400.
Not only that but you would probably need to shoot the 120-400 at f8-f11 for best IQ.

since you will be shooting during the day, most likely, go for the reach of the 500
