Sigma 30mm 1.4 vs 18-35mm 1.8

Now that the Sigma 30mm 1.4 Art is coming soon, I'm having trouble choosing between it and the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8...

Well we'll have an in-depth review of both lenses once they finally come out, so I hope that'll help you pick the right one! The difference in IQ between the zoom and the prime will probably be key IMO, since that has to be considered alongside the already-significant difference in price.

This will be very interesting to see. I wonder if size and weight will be the biggest difference (besides price)?

Until the review comes out, you just might have to choose one and try it out for yourself - that's usually the best way! (else you'll have to compare Canon or Nikon mount reviews)

Judging by the Lenstip reviews of both lenses (both on Canon 50D) the 18-35 zoom clearly out-resolves the 30mm at the edges at f1.8. CA appears worse on the 30mm. There appears to be less distortion in the 18-35 at the longer end of its range. The 30mm wins when comparing flare resistance. But of course the 30mm is smaller and cheaper.

Optically, the zoom (remarkably) appears to be the overall winner! Interested to read the reviews of the Pentax versions when they're available. At the moment, I won't be jumping to buy the 30mm f1.4. It is clearly not in the class of the Art 35mm f1.4 (which though is much bigger and heavier, and more expensive).

Adam, please have a review of all the ART lenses, 30mm 1.4, 18-35mm 1.8 and 35mm 1.4 once all of them are available. Thanks!

I'm in the same boat, as I imagine many others here may be in choosing between the two. The easy answer is to buy both and use them for different reasons/occasions. But it may well come down to whether you like primes or zooms...

My plan is to keep the 30 I already have and add the 18-35. The new 30 doesn't offer much I need. If I want across the frame sharpness, I use my 40 Ltd. If I need close focus, I grab my 35 Ltd. the new 30 is worse than the Limiteds at those specific things, and maybe not as good as the old 30 for center sharpness wide open, certainly no better. Also, the focal plan curvature of the old 30 makes backgrounds even blurrier, whic is what I use that lens for. If I need HSM, I'll use the new 18-35.

Cool, Adam! Can you guys also include a side (if not main) comparison with the older Sigma 30mm version as well as the 35mm Art?

Cool! Do you have flickr or forum sample photos to show me the curvature blur? One of the reason I want the 30mm is for environmental "portrait", with the subject framed almost in the centre.

It will probably just be a standalone review, but we'll see.
