More Art?

If Sigma's commercial use of the term 'Art Lens' becomes known as a defined product and role, Pentax is way ahead of the game.
The Limited Series. Both the FA'a and DA's would easily qualify if I'm understanding it correctly.
High quality construction, outstanding optical characteristics that convey some special rendering, bokeh, Pixie Dust or otherwise magical look. Fast max apertures (usually), mid-focal length prime, great for low-light, candid, studio, scenic and people. Expensive, but worth it.
Not as purpose-specific as a macro, long sports telephoto, tilt/shift or UWA. Generally equal to the best primes from any maker.
I'll guess every lens maker already has a handful of primes (or, a zoom?) they could toss into the ring. We're already there.
JMO,
Ron

There really isn't one. According to Sigma

Lenses | Sigma Corporation of America

According to lomography

Http://shop.lomography.com/en/lenses/art-lenses

But in the end you can do art with any lens or camera. They are merely tools. Use your macro for portraits or landscapes why not. like paintings everyone as an opinion on what good art is.

Just a marketing term, Theraphael.

Art is to Sigma Art lenses as dreams are to the Boeing Dreamliner.

I always thought the 787 got its name because it will fly these ridiculously long routes that involve the passengers sleeping most of the flight...hence, the cabin walls will be lined with dreams.

You might lie awake in terror if you dwell on the fact that it relies on a mass of Lithium Ion batteries. (I'm sure this problem has now been resolved! )

Shakespeare said it all, and marketing types have been bastardising the meaning of language ever since:
"but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself."

Take a bow, Rob ... and you look fetching with your ruffled shirt, pantaloons and codpiece.

Thank you, thank you. You've been a wonderful audience.

Damn codpiece is too tight, though…

We can fix that with surgery.

As to the definition of Art lens, putting on my cynical hat here, you follow this recipe:

Start with one ordinary wide-aperture, acceptably-sharp zoom or prime lens.
Stir in a cup of pretentiousness and a pinch of hipster.
Add verbose and fancy nouns and adjectives to taste.
Crank the aperture wide open and add blades till the subject is soft and the bokeh is smooth.

Serves one.
