This is been mentioned once or twice, but might as well hold everyone's feet to a fire. What is your "desert island" lens. In other words, if you could only have ONE lens to shoot with, what would it be?

My current choice: 35mm ltd macro.

At the moment, I only have one lens, the FA 35mm. It's fast and fits many applications with a little creativity.

Of course if I was actually on an island surrounded by miles of ocean, I'd prefer a long macro lens for all the bugs and birds.

Bigma...

That way I could go from near normal to scanning the horizon for ships.

Also, with a front element that big, it would be snap to use for signalling...

If there is a zoom that can cover and equal all my lovely prime, that would be my "the one" lens.

With what I have now, it would have to be either the 17-70 for it's versatility or the 43 for it's IQ. Ideally though, if I could only have 1 lens that I don't have (yet), it would have to be the Tamron 28-75/2.8, as it seems to be the best combination of IQ and versatility.

it would be a tough call....of the lenses i've owned or own....i'd be torn between the 10-17, 10-20 and the 18-250.

i think it would boil down to the 10-20 and 18-250, and from there it's a coin flip.

thinking the 10-20 is a fun lens, the 18-250 is a really versatile lens covering the bulk of the range i'd want.....

well that's a tough one and I'd have to choose between the Bigma and the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 XR Di. The Tamron is on the camera most of the time and gets switched off for more specalized situations. But the Bigma covers such a hge range and is actually very sharp through most of the range.

So it would have to be the Bigma and I would sure miss the 28-75, the 31mm, heck the whole bag.

Just one lens? Nah, in that case I won't be going to the desert island. I'd rather stay at home so I can play all my lenses


Seriously, if I can only keep one lens, I'd keep the FA31 If I can only bring one lens out for a walk, it can be any lens. I'll just shoot whatever pleases me from the viewfinder.

I would want the crappy mirror lens I'm getting soon, so perhaps I could use it to signal a passing boat or plane, or maybe start a fire.

Otherwise, the 10-17 for picture-taking purposes.

For flexibility, I would have to go with my DA* 16-50.

1. There would be no one to share the photos with

2. When the SD card filled up there would be no way to store the photos

3. When the battery runs out there would be no way to recharge it

Note: I am assuming this is the classic deserted desert island - palm tress, coconuts etc - and not the Maldives or similar

either my current Sigma 28/1.8 or the new 35/2.8 Macro... something of normal FL, with good macro capabilities. Landscapes get old fast on a desert island

I'll be concise and to the point - Tamron 18-250mm (or Pentax equivalent).

Best do-it-all lens of all the lenses I've owned and currently own. And that's some lenses...!!

Since I don't have the DA35mm, I would say my Pentax FA 50mm f/2.8 Macro. Can shoot close-ups, portraits, scenics, copying, etc.
