M42 Equivalent to FA 77 Ltd?

I can't afford a FA 77 Ltd, but I love the pics it takes. Is there an M42 lens that equals, or comes close to, the "quality" of the FA 77 Ltd? Thanks.

ETA: Recommendations for M42 equivalents of other FA and DA limited lenses are welcome, too!

The Takumar 85mm f1.8 is close in terms of focal length and aperture, and gets rated at 9.5 in the PF lens reviews.
The K 85/1.8 is very special as well, but is getting up there in price now.
The Samyang/Rokinon/Vivitar 85mm f1.4 is probably the bargain you are looking for (mid $200s). Check out the PF lens review section. https://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/samyang-85mm-f1-4-aspherical-if.html

Jack.

CZJ Biotar 75/1.5 M42 mount version

To match it in size, its the M85/2 (but its poorer in CA resistance)
To match it in optics, still not too big, its the S.Takumar 85/1.8 or the K85/1.8 (but its certainly bigger)
I would consider the S.Takumar 85/1.9 too, but its the biggest one of the 3.

Fact is, the FA77ltd is hard if not impossible to match all things considered (build, size, optics, rendering)

If looking for one that is close, any of the 85mm are good in their own right with the M85 and K85 being reasonably small imo.

K85/1.8 or CZJ Biotar 75/1.5 doesn't seems like an option since OP already mentioned about limited budget.

Samyang 85 is an option OR Jupiter-9 if you can find a good copy.

M85/2 is another option if you are shooting in controlled condition else CA would be such a bad that only option would be to convert it to B&W.

Nikon 85/f2 is cheap and very good for the price, you need to change the mount though.

If you are relaxed about the focal length, M100/f2.8 is a very very good lens for portrait, and off-course there are plenty of cheap 135/2.8 to choose from - there is a not-so-good reputed Bayonet in market place for $50 which IMO is an awesome lens for the price.

For a really low cost alternative, perhaps someone has tried the SMC Takumar M42 F1.4 50mm (maybe $60 - $80 for a good example) with a decent 1.7 teleconverter for a 85mm F2.0 equivalent? Any to report?

I know I have a couple M42 teleconverts somewhere which I never have used - and the 1.4/50.. Should I dig them out and give it a try - or not worth it?

Also remember on APS-C the 50mm itself is equivalent to 75mm. I find it a great Portrait lens with my K-01

And as mentioned above, if you can stand the 135mm length, for maybe $40 you can get the M42 Vivitar Komine F2.8 - to me a surprisingly good lens for the money if you get a good example... I think I'll just stick with the lenses I have for now. If I need to do a portrait I have an M 1.4/50 and an M 1.7/50. My other lenses are fine for the type of photography I usually do. Thanks.

I just picked up, at long last, the 77ltd, and wish I had done so three years ago when it was far cheaper. I just paid a used price for nearly what it could have been had for new three years. Granted the copy I received is flawless, quite literally, and had original caps box docs etc.... Still, if a part of you wants the 77, you can at least rest assured it depreciates hardly at all. All of the pricing aside, my wish to have bought one earlier stems much more from the fact that in 2 short days it has become my favourite lens by quite a margin for all of those reasons mentioned in this thread: uncanny rendering at such an impressively small size for this length. There's a reason it's as revered as it is, that is beyond clear to me now. I've a feeling it will rarely come off my body.
