Pentax DA 16-45 f/4 - the only choice for US$400

Your right! at $85.00 it does seem like they are giving it away. I bought the body only at the time so I have never used this lens, but I imagine I want something a little better. What if my budget was US$400.00 ?
For a budget of US $400, my personal choice would come down to just one lens: the DA 16-45 f/4. It is a superb lens. Image quality is excellent.

It was a hard choice for me to put out the extra money to get the DA* 16-50 for the extra stop of speed and the weatherproofing. The weatherproofing was the thing that pushed me to finally purchase the more expensive lens. To this day, I am wondering if I should have bought the 16-45 and an AF540FGZ flash instead of the 16-50, despite the fact that I love the image quality and handling of the 16-50.

My vote is for the Sigma 17-70. I have this lens and for under $400 new, I think it's one of the best values for people who want something better than the kit lens, but don't want to spend a small fortune. Not only is it faster than the 18-55, the focal range is longer, and it has a quasi-macro feature (1:2.3) that's really good. Gently used, you can find these for around $300 or so in the marketplace.

Got mine for $325 + tax new from Delaware Camera in Buffalo, NY.

That's their eBay price but if you start your in-store inquiry with "I saw you had this listed on eBay, do you have any in stock", they'll most likely pricematch it for you (instore is normally $399).

Ofc if you're not from near Buffalo or traveling there soon you can use their eBay store.

My first choice would have been the 16-50mm but the QC issues I heard about after reading a few reviews does worry me. I would be prepared to buy it locally and get a return agreement should I have any dramas but the cost here is crazy. (the Aussie dollar is catching up to the US ATM) I just cannot see the point in buying a lens that I 'may' have to send back and fourth half way around the world a few times before getting lucky, even if it is half the price.

I got it wrong in the post above, I don't need a tele right now, what I meant was a zoom style lens.

I am heading towards the 17-70mm Sigma because it appears to be a little faster than the Pentax 16-45mm. I get a little further throw for a few less dollars. Bonus.

Thanks for everyones input, it is all helpful.

I'll put my vote in for the Pentax 16-45mm and the Tamron 28-70mm. I've had a chance to play with both (more with the Pentax) and have been very pleased with the results. Both are really sharp and I think a great value for the cost.

If your talking about a prime then the Pentax 35mm/f2 is very well regarded.

I dropped AU$399.00 on the 17-70mm f2.8 Sigma at Photo Continental here in Bris-vegas. They list for AU$499.00 RRP around these parts.

Not sure what this guy on eBay is thinking?

Anyone wanting to part with that kind of cash would know a little bit about how much this lens is really worth... Or would they???
