pentax fa 50mm f1.4 VS Sigma 24-60 f2.8 dg ex (TEST/REVIEW)

Just bought a new Sigma 24-60 f2.8 dg ex... Didn't see much on the forum when I was researching, soo this might be some help to future buyers. Tested it out with fa 50mm 1.4. Took a few shots, more to come later... I think its a keeper, image quality is on par with 50mm 1.4, maybe a little better. Build quality is really nice, some might think its heavy but I love the weight ... It does hunt in low light, but can't complain for the price I paid. Let me know what you'll think, or if I missed something in the comparison test?

Thanks

Thanks for the post. I have been thinking about getting the Sigma 24-60mm and your comparison is just what I needed to make up my mind. It looks like the 24-60 will be added to my collection. If you have any more shots from the 24-60, I like to see them.

since when those __2__ (as of ~2 AM EST) photos can be called a comparison ?

how about at least some newspaper on the wall shot side by side @ f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8 where you can actually see both center and borders.

That might be a more scientific approach but how often do you shoot newspapers on the walls ?

I have the Sigma 24-60 EX as well, and I really like it. I have never tried the FA 50/1.4, so I can't comment on this. It sometimes hunts a bit in low light, but rarely ever misses. And when it has locked focus, it's spot on.

This lens is really a good deal, it's good in terms of IQ and built. It's a bit on the heavy side, but not too much. And it has a 77mm thread, which at least allows sharing filters with many wide angle lenses and the upcoming 70-200's from S. and T. And it's full frame so it's future ready

Oh, and it's relatively close-focussing, and has a nice 9-blade aperture.

Maybe I'm going to fill out a review soon.

Sigma 17-70mm DC Macro VS Sigma 24-60mm EX DG

Here's my test comparing both lenses last night.
I retest at 53mm and 60mm this afternoon, and result is the same. I retest becoz I'm curious why Sigma 24-60mm EX DG is outperformed by Sigma 17-70mm at center.

one is macro and another is not... so it is kinda natural to see macro getting better results in
sharpness.

Here is my humble opinion of your choice of lenses for this comparison test.

Scott, the reason I tested both lenses becoz Sigma 24-60mm is currently tempting, only $220 (compared to $370 Sigma 17-70mm).
If we purchased the Sigma 24-60mm EX DG, we could save $150. But we loose the wide end (17-23mm).
Both would be good as kit lens replacement. But I'm ended having both. A combination of Tamron 10-24mm and Sigma 24-60mm EX DG would be great as well.

The 24-60 is an 'okay' lens....

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/35721-sigma-ex...-60mm-wow.html

Comparing it to the FA50 (which I also have) really is comparing apples to oranges. They serve 2 totally different purposes for me. I replaced the 17-70 with the 24-60 as my walkaround lens and did find myself missing the wide end of the 17-70. I ended up grabbing a DA12-24 and now have the range I normally shoot in covered pretty well.
