Lens hood on smc-m 50mm.

I have the smc-m 50mm f1.7 which is pretty good but i am finding it is very bad with flares. Is there a lens hoods available?

It's probably not worth it to find an official Pentax hood. I bought one of the official square hoods made by Pentax, but I found it annoying to use. I think BH carries them for about $30 each, which is kind of pricy.

Now I just use a collapsable 49mm rubber hood made by Hoya from eBay for my FA 50mm. It should work fine on an M 50mm too.

I have this one. works on all 49mm lens.

Your local photo store might have one of these in stock. It's a fairly popular item.

sorry but what is the side dimension (deep) when screwed in)? 25mm? 30mm?

too deep => vignetting ?

If you use a digital APS kamera, you can use a lens hood for Pentax F70-210 / FA70-200(itīs in rubber).

if you check eBay, sometimes they have the old 49mm screw Takumar hoods for reasonable prices.

The crop factorof the APS-c sensor alters the Angle of View of the lens, so the old hoods no longer block all stray light from the lens path.

Angle of View APS-c, 50mm lens: V=18.96* H=33.61* Diag=38.08*
Angle of View 35mm, 50mm lens: V=26.99* H=39.66* Diag=46.79*

A much "deeper" hood is required to keep oblique angle stray light out of the lens.

A traditional hood is better than nothing, but you can play with the compression of the adjustable rubber hoods until you get what you want.

They look like (&^$%$& though, don't they.

I use an old collapsible rubber 49mm Vivitar hood I picked up for about a buck from KEH. I have lots of 49mm diameter lenses, so it pretty much lives in my camera bag.
