Need help with macro decision!

Hey everyone, I was wondering if it would be better to buy macro adapters for my SMC-A 50mm f/1.7 prime or my DA 16-45mm zoom. I wonder because everyone on here says that primes are always sharper then zooms so I was wondering if it would better to buy the macro adapters for the 50.

Thanks, Cory

Cory,
How about going in a different direction, entirely--instead of getting macro adapters for the 50, pick up a set of cheap extension tubes on Fleabay. Since you're putting another lens in front of your 50, there will be a decrease in IQ if you use macro adapters. The extension tubes are hollow and go between your body and lens, so there's no decrease in IQ. I have a 50mm set that I use and I like them a lot. With a 50mm set, you'll get a 1:1 ratio just like a dedicated macro.

HTH,
Heather

Hey Heather, thanks for the info. I have never seen these extension tubes before, are they usually cheaper then macro adapters that screw onto the front of the lens?

If you don't want to or have the $$$ for a dedicated macro lens then I'd agree with Heather. You might also want to consider this thread to have a look at:

Cory,

A manual set of extension tubes is definitely cheaper than a set of closeup lenses. For example, the cheapest new set of 49mm closeup lenses is $37.50. Here is a Fleabay listing for a set of extension lenses for you to see what I mean:
Macro Extension Tube Set for Pentax K,PK mount camera - eBay (item 360043689155 end time Apr-23-08 11:29:57 PDT)
This seller is the seller I got mine from.

If you want to see some examples of what extension tubes + a FA43 can do, check this out:

2nd the extension tubes

I was using Vivitar extension tubes quite happily with my 50mm/1.7 before I bought my V105mm series 1 macro.

I got some nice images with that combination. The extension tubes cost my 3 dollars including shipping on fleybay as they were mislabeled as "T" mount.
