sigma 18-250 HSM question

could i please solicit some opinions of the sigma 18-250 with the HSM.s it worth the asking price of around $300.00 or so ? i have been looking at this one and the older pentax 18-250 as a hiking lens to cut down on some of the weight of carrying DA* lenses. i know the pentax 18-250 is a re branded tamron and also wonder if it is really worth the prices i see asked for it. thanks everyone

That sounds like a good deal considering that the Pentax version is 2x more, especially if you're getting the latest version of the lens with HSM.

To be honest, most of the superzooms getting to 300mm are around that price range - and with the Sigma you get the nice bonus of HSM. I think the DA 18-250 is priced around that range but lacking HSM (although supposedly better IQ).

If I were traveling out of my country and I wanted to only bring one lens, I would consider this price pretty reasonable.

I disagree. I think the newest Sigma will beat both of those Pentax lenses.

The Sigma 18-250 is a great lens. Used in good light you will be surprised how sharp it can be.
Cracking AF that is very quiet and excellent close focus . I highly recommend this lens.

Now using this lens for more than 1 year. It has become the default mounted lens on my K-5.

the latest Sigma 18-250 HSM Macro is the best choice for traveling super zoom, I am taking one with me +K-3 + Sigma Contemporary 17-70 in 2 weeks time to travel through Asia and Europe.
the latest model has 62mm filter, compact and light, the older sigma 18-250 OS HSM is much bigger, heavier 628g and 72mm filter.
choice number 2 would be DA 18-250 , very similar in design, size and weight to the latest Sigma, in camera correction but noisy AF and older technology

I had a copy of this lens (the hsm macro) briefly. It was ok, but not quite up to my other lenses (16-45, for example) at the time. Honestly I might have kept it if it didn't drop off so fast in aperture as you move out from 18mm. At the time I had "only" a k200, and high-iso to compensate for the lens speed wasn't as much of an option as with some newer cameras. I'm not sure I had the best copy of the 18-250, although there were no glaring defects. I've read reviews where people went through multiple copies of the 18-250 before getting a good one.

It's a better buy now than when I purchased it, and at the current price I might consider it again. On the other hand, you probably have an even greater performance divide to conquer with your da* lenses.

I think you'll find pretty much the same issues with any superzoom - by most reports, the sigma is one of the better ones, if not the best. In hiking terms, I'd feel limited by a 28mm equivalent on the wide end, so I'd probably add at least a wider lens.
