lens hood 18-135 and 50-135?

Hi all,

I've recently purchased these two lenses without hoods. I know the real thing is expensive (about $45 on BH) for each so I'm wondering which you could buy if you could only get one right now? I know I can get the ebay screw in version and I may do that for the other but I like being able to reverse mount for storage. Will the 18-135 benefit more because of the wide end? Or should I get it for the 50-135 because it's that much better of a lens?

Both lenses will benefit from lens hoods. One benefit is that the hood will take the damage in a physical situation rather than the lens. The other benefit is flare control from light sources just outside the lens' view. With zooms, the problem is that the hood is optimized for the short end, not the long, and is much less effective at the 135mm end of those two lenses. I suspect that the hood for the 50-135 will be too tight on the 18-135.

Get it for the 50-135, if for nothing else but the protection (when bumping in to things). This is especially import if you don't use a filter, but even a filter can smash and damage the front element. The DA*50-135 is your more expensive lens, so it's more important to protect.

Also, the 50-135 looks impressive with the lens hood on it. You don't always want this, but sometimes it's beneficial.

Finally, just based on the length of the 50-135 hood, I'd guess it blocks out a lot of glare, and probably really helps the images.

Try looking on eBay for a hood to fit either Pentax FA 28-105 F4-5.6 or Tamron 28-105 F4-5.6 (#179d). I have not found a part # for the Pentax, but it is likely a re-badged Tamron anyway. The Tamron hood part # is 1d3fh. If you can save a bunch over buying new go for it. I have one for my DA 18-135 and aside from not having a filter window it fits almost perfect (a little stiff) and it can be reversed.

Good luck in you search.

Jeff

Thanks all. I will buy the original for the 50-135 and try to find the one Jeff mentioned for the 18-135. My tamron 28-75 hood almost fits the 50-135! Dang! I got an amazing deal on the lens though so I can't complain.

It does, but I bought it cheaply on ebay and the posting had been edited. The main post said it did, underneath was an edit that said no hood. Ended up getting $10 back on the price. So the lens cost me $300, just spent $45 for the real hood.
