OK, understood.
I'm looking at buying the Di version, also for $130
It should be an OK walk-around lens until I buy
a 70-200 f2.8 later, or 50-135/150 f2.8

I orginally bought the Tamron 70-300 LD to replace my Pentax 50-200 which I wasn't particularly impressed by - the Tamron is quite sharp but I found my copy rendered colour/contrast poorly.....

I then bought the Sigma 70-300 APO so that I could do a side by side comparison - I've now sold the Tamron, reasons....

Whilst the Tamron is a little sharper, not massively so but it is noticeable the Sigma produces nicer colours/contrast - my Tamron 70-300 colours were poor, can only describe them as "muddy". The Sigma just produced the nicer looking images to me...

I also prefer the build of the Sigma - size wise nothing much in it

I thought i'd try a moon shot tonite. this k20d 100% crop, shutter priority, was handheld at 300mm, f8, 1/125, 400iso. it was sharpened in photoshop for lens blur, 1.8 pixels at 70%

ive had experience with the q-ray/sigma 70-300 whatever and i think its got way more CA/ purple fringing more than any other lens ive tried, i think its alright, but alright doesnt cut it. the tamron is definitely the best especially since it costs less than the pentax ...

the pentax is not long enough for a budget zoom with great macro capabilities...

Have you got these the wrong way around ?

The Tamron 70-300 LD DI is often fondly called the "purple monster", my copy exhibited very strong purple most notably after 200mm - the Sigma 70-300 APO I have shows none at any focal length.

To be honest both these lenses are "budget" so it's unfair to expect them to perform like professional glass - they're both pretty good for the money. I think many people (me included) are hoping that the new Pentax 55-300 will improve on the weaknesses of both - ie, the purple of the Tamron & the sharpness of the Sigma, after all it is going to costs quite a bit more !!
