Never say "never"...

Less than 10 days ago I vowed to never get rid of my favorite lens.....something about prying it from my https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/24681-cold, dead fingers-a.html. Well, I guess my fingers are cold and dead because I swapped out both my Pentax-A zooms and replaced them with Pentax-F zooms. I new zooms are the F35-70/F3.5-4.5 and the F70-210?F4-5.6. The old eyes were causing me to miss some shots that I know I would've captured with AF so I went ahead a made the switch.

The F35-70 is the exact lens with the same optical formula as my old lens so the transition has been seamless. The F70-210 is different in that it's not a constant F4 lens, there's no macro at 70mm (something I didn't use much anyway), and it has a slightly different optical formula. In some very brief backyard testing, I find it to be just as good as the A70-210. In fact, I think it's sharper wide open that the A lens is.

Test Shots w/F70-210.....straight jpegs from the camera, no PP other than crop the 2nd shot.

210mm wide open @F5.6

100% crop

210mm@F9 bokeh

210mm@F5.6 bokeh

Based on the results I've gotten so far, I'd say the rest of my manual focus lenses may be in trouble. I think I can see a F50/F1.4 and Sigma 24mm/F2.8 macro in my future.

I have the F 35-70mm and it is my favorite walk around lens. Nice range for street and portraits. I also like to use the macro for flowers. Mine is also quite sharp.

No, not the 1.8....that's a little too rich for my blood.

I'm talking about this one (completed auction): Sigma AF Super-Wide II 24mm F2.8 Macro, Pentax K-Mount - eBay (item 110241789783 end time Apr-16-08 10:03:37 PDT)

Ah, OK. I have the manual focus version, but it's just not fast enough for indoor shooting. Great for outdoor use, though. Problem is, if you're going to pay $180 for the AF version, I'd rather pay $160 extra and get a new lens that's 1.3 stops faster. That's my gripe with eBay, it usually doesn't make sense to pay the prices most lenses command.

The 35-70 is an awesome little lens. Short range but really the perfect street lens. I only sold mine for the Tamron 28-75 f2.8.

The 70-210 is a great lens in many respects. Heather had one for sale last week at $125.00 and I was shocked no one grabbed it. It's much sharper than the DA50-200 with better IQ, IMO. Again I only sold it for the Sigma 70-200 F2.8. In this case that was a mistake. The Sigma is a stunning lens but it's big and I miss the Pentax for a compact, carry around lens. Plus I miss the "Butt Ugly" look of the F.

You're right about the A35-70....it's a fantastic little lens. I doubt I would part with it if I didn't get a really good deal on the F35-70. They are the exact same lens, minus the AF.

BTW, I bought Heather's lens (the pics above are from her lens). I just sold my A70-210 for a few bucks more, so I'd call it a pretty good trade....
