Being a barracks lawyer, Fookus, you're getting away with six, but haven't a strategy for distance shooting except cropping!

PS 24mm seems to get neglected a bit ... I love my Sigma 1.8!

Da15 F4
Fa35 F2
F135 F2.8

The FA35 F2 is great for one person portraits across the table and the old SMC-F135mm F28 is stellar except for some purple fringing. Focusses way faster than my Da*50-135 although I get no fringing from the DA*.

I’ll choose from my existing kit and assume I’d want a wide, mid, and narrow FOV. Might also wish to include a macro in the group.

Wide
DA 15mm Ltd or my next widest, K 28/3.5. The clear choice for me is the exceptional SMC DA 15.

Mid
Let’s see... SMC DA 35mm Ltd; S-M-C Takumar 35/3.5; M 50/1.7; F 50/1.7; SMC Takumar 50/1.4; SMC Macro Tak 50/4; K 55/1.8.
I’d want a fairly long spread from the 15mm, but if I choose a 50 mm or 55 mm lens, it would be too narrow for indoors. I’ll take the DA 35mm Ltd, which gives me flexibility for indoors, outdoors, and macro as a bonus. This is actually one of my most-used and best general-purpose lenses.

Long
My choices are S-M-C 85/1.8; Tamron Adaptall 90/2.8 macro (72B); M 100/2.8; or DA* 300mm. These are all fine lenses, but the clear choice is the DA* 300 - nothing else in the kit can do what it does.

So, the kit is chosen:
SMC DA 15 Ltd
SMC DA 35 Ltd
DA* 300.

Weaknesses of this 3-lens kit:
- No optimum portrait lens, although the DA 35 would be good enough.
- Not an ideal focal length for macro shots of nature. I’ll be closing in and freaking out the insects!
- A huge spread between the 35 and 300. I guess I’d get exercise ‘zooming with my feet’ for the intermediate distances.

(I guess I'm not allowed the throw in the DA* 50-135! Darn.)

Comments?

- Craig
Break the rules a bit, how about a 4 lens kit? Add the DFA 100 Macro WR to your chosen 3 and you have the best 4 lens kit you can get in my opinion.

Regards, John

Well, I have new lenses now,
So my set of three will be DA15, DA50 and DFA100 macro WR

I'm still unsure about the DA50, it can be replaced with DA35. Not sure yet.

That's a lot of stitched shots to get your sunset panorama, Tom!
Stiched shots? Sunsets? I'm a bird guy.

I'm not sure I know what these are.

my 3 primes set
  • DA15
  • F28
  • DFA100WR
But prefer to go out with a single prime or 2 at max depends on where I go.
Used to use FA35 a lot, but not sure how I ended up with F28 now! Still keep the 35 though.

so here a question i want to give to you:
If you had to give away all zooms and decide on 3 primes to use from now on, which would those be for you?
Not considering bang for your buck or prices in general. I only want to know what set of 3 primes would keep you happy "forever" for your photography?
fa*24/2
fa43/1.9
da70/2.4

My three primes

WHAT I HAVE:
FA 77
Canon FD 55 mm f 1.2 (permanently converted to K mount)
FA 43

WHAT I WANT TO HAVE:
FA 77
Canon FD 55 aspherical f 1.2 (permanently converted to K mount for around $1700 total cost including conversion & the Canon lens)
FA 43

If I keep thinking about this, I might decide I want the FA 31 instead of the FA 43 or instead of the Canon FD 55 aspherical. I have the Sigma 30 mm f 1.4, but love the results I see from the FA 31. This is a tough question!

I'm pretty happy with the combo of 21ltd, 43ltd, and 100wr. You cant get much more lighter and versatile than those three.(swapping 21 for 15 would also work for most)
Of course I lust after the other two FA ltds!
