Is this Super Takumar really the 8-element version?

I bought this because it seemed like a good price. But now I think maybe the seller had it misrepresented as i see that the red marking is on the left side of the 4, not the right. However it does say A/M and not auto/manual. The glass is also not yellowed, witch is kind of odd no? Is this the 8-element version?

Based on the seller's photos, I don't think so. The rear element does not protrude. That and the IR index sort of seals it. So, it looks like you did not get a killer deal. OTOH, it does look to be a VERY clean ST 50/1.4 with front/rear caps at a decent price point. I would contact the seller and suggest a partial refund of $50.

See this MF lens forum post for comparison photos:

According to your sig, you have the S-M-C Tak 50/1.4, all of which were 7 element lenses.

I agree, not an 8 element but a good price for one in that condition.

Serial # seems high for 8-element. 154xxxx is about as high as they went. Rear element looks flat rather than protruding.

Yellowing isn't an indicator, exposure to UV de-yellows or prevents yellowing.

Yes, I already have a 50mm 1.4 7 element. If this isn't the 8 element i will contact the seller to cancel the item as it is not advertised correctly.

According to the service manual there were:
Product # 358 8 elements with the 8th being behind the threaded rear frame end ( from the exploded view it is not clear how that was held in place).
Product # 378 7 elements with the 7th being in front of the rear frame end .
Product # 37801 7 elements with the 7th being in front of the rear frame end , elements interchangeable with 378 and the word "AUTO"

Well, there ya go. Perhaps it is time to update the descriptions in the lens reviews for both the 8 and 7 element versions.

I have what I believe to be an 8 element version based on the location of the IR mark. Its serial is 1574098. Has A/M markings. Interesting. It also shows slight yellowing, not that that is definitive

my 8 element has a serial # 1335309 and the IR mark is to the right of the "4". It also has a protruding rear element which when you focus to infinity sticks out a little behind the end of the screwmount. also I believe that the 8 element doesn't yellow because it didn't have the radioactive glass..i read that somewhere and it could be wrong so dont take my word for it

It's a Super Multi Coated Tak, I understand the S-M-C is a completely different version. Is that right? and What is the difference between this one here, a Super Tak, the Super Multi Coated and the S-M-C Tak's on the 50mm f/1.4 flavor? Thanks

The S-M-C Tak has 8 aperture blades, and the open aperture metering linkage. And SMC obviously.

I have an old catalog, no date
It must have been the time the SMC was being introduced because there is an SMC description of the 7 layer coating process in the front cover, and a mixture of Super Tak and SMC Tak in the catalog.
In this catalog the SMC Tak 50mm f/1.4 is shown with 7 elements.
The service manual copy here, referred to in my post #8 above has reference to dates 1963 and does not have any SMC lenses in it, only Takumar and Super takumar, and shows 2 models of the Super Tak 50mm f/1.4 with 7 elements. That may mean that the 8 element lens was replaced with the 7 elements before the SMC coating came into production.
